Week of 9/21 - 9/25

Hey Panda Family,

Week 6, check it off! Thank you to everyone for your efforts to get the iReady diagnostics complete over the last two weeks. We are at 97% complete for Reading and 95% complete for Math! This is all because of you 😊 Here are the updates for the week!

Pumpkins (from PTA): Our pumpkins sale has gone very well and we are down to 37 pumpkins. We have decided to let the teachers have the remaining pumpkins and if they would like to donate any funds ($1-$5) for one, we would appreciate the donation but we don’t expect anything. If they chose to, they can drop the money in the white PTA money box inside the office. The pumpkins are at the school in the natural area where the panda is at the bus lot. They are pie pumpkins so they are great for cooking!

Progress Reports: Here is the link to the google folder for K-2 Progress Reports (please make a copy before you begin typing in it). Grades 3-5, please make sure you see the email from me on 9/17 for your student Progress Report instructions. Progress reports are due on Wednesday, September 30 according to the district (please just make sure they go out by the end of this week).

Classroom Walkthroughs: CWTs will begin this week. The form will look a little different this year since it was given to us by the district (I will send it out by email for you to view). After we complete the walkthrough, our responses will come to your email just like in the past. Please understand, this is only to help you grow as an instructional leader in your classroom. Even in the remote setting we must forge ahead with our normal feedback measures. We look forward to popping in to your classrooms to see the amazing instruction that is happening!

October Drills: we will have 3 drills in October: Fire, Earthquake, and Tornado. Remember, if you are in the building you must participate in the drill.  Please keep your mask on and social distance.  Drills will be held October 9th @ 8:00, weather permitting.

Classroom Preparations: Thank you to everyone for getting your classrooms prepped and prepared for in-person learning. Y'all have done an awesome job being creative with your classroom setups. It is my understanding that district personnel will be coming by soon to do a walkthrough of our building to make sure we haven't overlooked anything. Make sure anything with-in reach of the students is covered with paper. If we need to make any adjustments based on their feedback we will let you know.

Positive Communication Form: Giving positive feedback is so important! Please make sure you have sent at least one positive message to each of your parents about their child by the end of the week. You can use the form linked here to record (Positive Communication Form) or you can make your own. It can simply just say: student name, communication tool (dojo, phone, text, email, etc.), and date. This does not need to be elaborate, but I use these a lot when some parents attempt to say we only communicate what is wrong. Please share your form with me when it is complete. Thank you to those who have already completed this.

Timothy's Tech Corner: Please click on the following link to see Mr. Younts' technology updates for the week - Timothy's Tech Corner - September 28

Technology in the Classrooms: The district technology department has begun upgrading/adding some devices in our classrooms to help with instruction as we prepare for Plan B in-person learning. When we get details on training for the technology we will share it with you.

CARES Team Update from Ms. Ceglowski:
  • 17 visits were completed this week.  Many successful, some are works in progress.
  • 3 hotspots were delivered.
  • Please call your family and ask if they have transportation prior to asking for help with delivering packets and other items.  At least half of the homes we visited, had cars in the driveway.  One parent stated she was on her way to pick up the packet.  Please confirm and double confirm that no one (not a friend, a neighbor, no one) is able to get to the school.  Thanks!
Please use this link to get up-to-date information about meal locations, learning centers, technology assistance and everything related.
  • We are hearing more about behavior issues now that we are in the groove of things. Please let me know what you are seeing and she will join a parent meeting just like if we were in person.
  • Also, please share your live link with me and I'll come and observe a student or try to troubleshoot a behavior.  I miss popping into your rooms!
  • If you see something on a virtual call that causes you to feel concerned about a student's safety, call CPS. This would be drugs in the room, a young child caring for a baby with no adult at home, physical fighting in the background. You can call me first if it helps and I can guide you through it.  Remember stress levels are very high and families are experiencing a lot.  A call to child protective services means you want to get them help!
  • If you are not sure about 504 or IST info on one of your kiddos, please reach out!
  • Thanks again for all the wonderful work you do everyday!
Packet Materials: I encourage each of you to continue sending out tangible packet materials for your students as needed (novels, worksheets, manipulatives, etc.). Please coordinate the pickup with your families. Every parent that I have talked with mentions how helpful it is to have a combination of tangible and virtual assignments. If the office can support you with this please let us know.

Also from Ms. Medley - Bauer is LOVING the Destiny App that he learned about in Media.  He is on there constantly looking at books, discovering new authors, etc.  Thanks to Mrs. Epperly for making sure the kids know all about this awesome resource!

From Ms. Grubbs - Shout out to 1st grade!  They are the first grade to 100% complete their grade level's iReady diagnostic in a subject area (reading).  Amazing job 1st grade!

IF Updates

iReady weekly expectations: Now that we are ALMOST finished with the iReady diagnostics, students are ready to start their individualized learning paths.  We are asking that K-2 students complete 30 minutes of iReady, and 3-5 students should complete 45 minutes in iReady.  This applies for each subject, which means your students will be assigned iReady learning paths during their asynchronous time for reading AND math.  If they do not finish by Friday, they will need to complete it during Flex Friday.

Spelling City: If you would like to have your class use Spelling City, please let me know.  We have a few more spots left in our school account.  First come, first serve!

iReady makeup sessions: Don’t forget that this week is the week that students should complete any unfinished Reading or Math iReady diagnostics.  Mrs. Owens and I are offering to proctor some makeup sessions for your students.  Please use this document to communicate who is coming.  You will need to let the student know when to attend, and give them the link for the meeting.  Here is the link to the schedule and the link that you should send families.  Feel free to provide your own makeup sessions for your students as well.

October 1 PD session: On Thursday, 10/1, we will have our monthly afterschool PD session.  This month, we will focus on helping you become more comfortable with all iReady has to offer.  K-2 teachers will meet with Jayne to get a “beginner’s” version of the training.  4-5 teachers, you will meet with Breanne Smith, who is the IF at Union Cross, for an “advanced” training.  3rd grade teachers, you can pick whether you would like to attend the beginning or advanced training.  Stay tuned for the links to these differentiated virtual sessions!

Week of 9/14 - 9/18

 Hey Panda Family,

Week 5 and we are still alive 😊🙌 Thanks for all your hard work this past week! Hope you've enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend. Here are our updates for the week.

September 25th Workday: This upcoming Friday, September 25 is a Teacher Workday. You will not be required to complete student office hours this day. The district has required training sessions on this workday. Here is the statement from the district - In an effort to provide on-going support for all educators by ensuring we provide the best learning experiences for our students, the Instructional Services team would like to invite you to the September 25, 2020 RC Day Playlist.  The September 25 RC Day offers both required and optional learning experiences for educators in synchronous and asynchronous environments. The synchronous (live) and asynchronous (self-paced) sessions are designed to offer both support for the remote learning environment and to offer choice options to differentiate learning based on interest and need.

Progress Reports: Here is the link to the google folder for K-2 Progress Reports (please make a copy before you begin typing in it). Grades 3-5, please make sure you see the email from me on 9/17 for your student Progress Report instructions. Progress reports are due on Wednesday, September 30.

Classroom Preparations: Thank you for starting to prepare your classroom for students to return.  It is important to let Mr. Elkins or Mrs. Gardner know when your classroom is ready.  We will check to make sure all guidelines were followed then tag your door with a sticky note.  This will alert SMO that the room is ready to be detailed. (dusting, cleaning hard surfaces, cleaning the sink, sweeping, and mopping).  Classrooms should be set up and checked by Elkins or Gardner by September 25th.

Lesson Plans Update: At the beginning of the year we shared that our focus word for 2020-2021 was "flexibility". We have tried to let our actions speak that, and in an effort to be as flexible as possible we are suspending the submission of lesson plans until we return to in-person learning. We feel the amount of detail that is in each of your Canvas pages is nearly sufficient. There are only a few things we would like for you to add to your daily Canvas pages to replace turning in lesson plans:
  • Please add your "I can" statements in your subject blocks on your schedule
  • Please add the standards for the week as a new button that we can access or add them to your daily schedule page at the top
We hope you find this helpful. We care about each of you and I hope this helps save you a few hours in the weeks ahead.

PLT Participation: In order to make sure that we have lots of participation in our PLT, we ask that everyone keeps their camera on during PLT.  If you camera isn’t working, just let us know and we will help you address that.  Thank you for helping with this!

Timothy's Tech Corner: Please click on the following link to see Mr. Younts' technology updates for the week - Timothy's Tech Corner

Technology in the Classrooms: The district technology department has begun upgrading/adding some devices in our classrooms to help with instruction as we prepare for Plan B in-person learning. When we get details on training for the technology we will share it with you.

CARES Team Update from Ms. Ceglowski:
  • Benita and Jessica will be making home visits/packet deliveries on Monday.  Reach out if you have a need.
  • We are currently at 82.3% of students doing at least 50% of their work.
  • Continue to tell Jessica when you are concerned about a student's lack of participation.
  • Jessica just learned (Thank you Gant!) that your Powerschool and her Powerschool look very different and you do not, in fact, have access to the long list of contacts like she does.  So, please feel free to ask Jessica to check contacts for anyone you want to get in contact with and she will get that for you.
  • If anyone is willing to approach your church or another organization about supporting a PGE Panda monetarily at a remote learning center, there will likely be need to help cover the cost.  If you know anyone who is interested, link them up with Ceglowski.  Thanks!
Thanks so much for all your advocacy, and determination in getting our students connected to eLearning.  You are all amazing!

Thoughts and Prayers: Here is the obituary for Mr. V's father - Robert Vorbroker Sr.. Also, former Panda, Ms. Barneycastle's, husband has been diagnosed with liver cancer. Please keep both of them in your thoughts and prayers.

Week of 9/7 - 9/11

Hey Panda Family,

Week 4, wow we are already a month into school! It sure has flown by. Keep up the great work, and remember - each day is one small step back to normalcy 😊 Here are the updates for the week!

Staff Meeting: We will have our monthly staff meeting this Tuesday, September 15 @ 3:30. We will meet via Zoom. Please see the linked agenda (the Zoom link is in the agenda). Staff Meeting Agenda

Classroom Preparations: Please make sure you read over the email that was sent this past week titled "Classroom Preparations". This is important information that needs your attention as we prepare our classrooms for in-person socially distanced learning. Thank you for your help with this!

Panda Engagement Survey: One of our SIT goals for this year is to track our student's engagement during remote learning while also determining best practices to share with the staff to help increase engagement. Teachers, please help us by filling out this quick survey regarding your students' engagement at this point in remote learning. Panda Engagement Survey

Staffing Updates: Ms. Lam, our 3-5 EC Resource teacher, has chosen to pursue a different career path effective October 2. We would like to thank Ms. Lam for her hard work and service to our students. We will greatly miss her, and we wish her nothing but the best as she begins a new chapter.

Suicide Prevention (from our school psychologist): September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Typically, we would give an in-person training around this time of year so you can learn the signs and how to respond. Instead, please read our blog post so you know what to look for and what to do in case one of your students needs help, both during virtual and in person learning. If you have any questions, please reach out to one of the student services team members.

Gradebook Setup: Now that most of you have received live training, Mr. Younts is providing you with the following Quick Reference Documents (QRDs) and videos in case you need to go back and refresh your memory on what was discussed. Reach out to Timothy with any questions.

Technology in the Classrooms: The district technology department may be upgrading/adding some devices in our classrooms to help with instruction as we prepare for Plan B in-person learning. It is yet to be determined what (if any) technology we will receive. When we have more details we will share.

CARES Team Update from Ms. Ceglowski: A huge thank you to Pine Grove UMC and Goodwill Baptist Churches for their generosity in supporting one of our students through daycare assistance payments. We are lucky to have some of their congregation among us at PGE and we are grateful!
  • Please continue to email Ms. Ceglowski with concerns about students who are either not present or not engaged.
  • SIT is working on forms to be sent out to both staff and parents to get some baseline data on engagement during online learning.  Please encourage families to complete the form (will be sent out this week) and please complete the staff form as well (see staff form above).
  • Please remember that PowerSchool has emergency contact numbers listed under NC contacts that can be extremely useful if parents/guardians are not responding.  Aunts/uncles/granny/pawpaw - they are all fair game!
  • Ms. Ceglowski delivered some packets this past week with Ashley Owens.  Benita and Jessica are going out again on Monday.  Please get with Ms. Ceglowski if you have a pressing need to be delivered or addressed on Monday.
  • Hotspots are going out to those who were on the district list so we should (hopefully) be ready to get to our school waitlist soon.
  • Ms. Ceglowski was on a 504 this past week where the dad said he knows folks from all over doing school all different ways this fall and he feels that we are doing the best job by far!!!  Keep it up you guys are amazing!!!
Sympathy Card & Yearbooks: In case you haven't heard, Mr. V's (our former principal) father passed away recently from cancer. We have a sympathy card for him located in the office for everyone to sign. We also have two yearbooks, one for Ms. Pridgen's family and one for Ms. Hayes' family, in the office for everyone to sign as well. After the staff has signed them we are going to deliver them to their families as keepsakes.

WondersHere is some helpful information about Wonders, including a way to access Wonders directly from Canvas.  Just a warning: if you link Wonders to Canvas, when students open Wonders, it will automatically close Canvas, so they will have to open that back up at some point.  It’s still a cool trick!

Week of 8/31 - 9/4

 Hey Panda Family,

Week 3 and you continue to amaze me! Wonderful work this week as we slowly began to implement our full Remote Learning Schedule. I hope you take time to rest and do something fun on this long weekend! Here are our updates for the week.

Labor Day: This Monday, September 7 is Labor Day. There will be no school. Enjoy the long weekend!

Weekly Wrap for Parents: Starting this past Friday, I began posting a short Weekly Wrap for parents and families on Class Dojo School Story. I plan to highlight successes and reminders for parents each week here. I will make the post before I leave school each Friday afternoon.

Zoom Tip: Have you heard about the Push to Talk feature in Zoom? A cool trick in Zoom - when a student wants to unmute themselves all they have to do is hold down the spacebar. The student will keep holding down the spacebar to stay unmuted and be able to talk. When they are done talking they let up on the spacebar and they will automatically be muted again. Thanks for sharing, Ms. Rinfrette!

Principal Meeting Updates: This past week I had a full-day principal meeting. There was a lot of information that I am continuing to work through. Once I have gone through all the material I will send everyone an email with the highlights.

Flex Friday SEL: I wanted to share a neat idea that some grade levels are doing (and they have incorporated into their PDP SEL goal). On Flex Fridays they have created a SEL check-in form for students to fill out. Some have emojis where they pick how they are feeling, the student writes what went well that week, what they need help on, and so forth. The teachers are then using this data to personally follow-up with students/families if they need help, and to also gauge how their students are feeling. Here is the best part - this is a super simple way to take attendance on Flex Friday (especially for those students that have already completed all their work for the week). I saw it first with 3rd grade - great job!

CARES Team Update: Here is an update from our CARES Team.
  • Thank you all for working so hard to get in contact with families without overwhelming them. It helps so much when you have made several attempts prior to our additional attempts.  Great work!
  • We are down to one family that has not logged on at all.
  • If you have a student who has suddenly stopped attending or who has barely attended, please let Ms. Ceglowski know.
  • We are now able to also facilitate troubleshooting when a student is participating but maybe not enough or not to the best of his or her ability.  Send Ceglowski those names.
  • If anyone reaches out looking to help our Pandas, please send them to Ms. Ceglowski.  We are in need of monetary donations to help send students to remote learning daycare centers if possible.
  • A hotspot bus is coming to Kernersville!  Stay tuned for details!

Flex Benefits from Pierce Group: Due to COVID-19 restrictions, our Benefits Briefing will be held virtually this year on Tuesday, October 20 during our staff meeting.

You can access and download a copy of the Benefits Booklet at:

https://documentcloud.adobe.com/link/track?uri=urn:aaid:scds:US:90834958-389f-40bb-a195-f16e22339014#pageNum=1

You will receive a separate email after the staff meeting to be able to sign-up for an Individual 1-on-1 appointments.

Jose: Mr. Jose will be out on vacation for one more week. He will return on September 14. In the meantime, Ms. Faith will be helping with our daily custodial needs and Pam will open the building at 6:45 each morning.

PGE Calendar in Canvas: On the PGE Staff Canvas page, Ms. Willis is working to upload all our school meetings, events, birthdays, etc. to the calendar. Go to "Calendar" on the PGE Staff Canvas page to access.

Lesson Plans: Here are the lesson plan look-fors that Ms. Gardner and I will be checking during remote learning. We were able to give feedback on most plans this week. Remember, your plans provide you with a blue print for your teaching and it gives us clear insight as to what we should see and what standards are being assessed. Here you go - Lesson Plans 2020-2021

IT Help: Please submit your technology requests and questions to Mr. Younts using this Google Form

NCEES: Certified staff, please remember to sign up for your PDP conference.  Emails were sent a few weeks ago with attached resources and examples as well as a Sign-up Genius to schedule your conference.  Dates were adjusted on the Sign-Up Genius because of IEP meetings, so please do not wait until the last minute to sign up.

Leave Requests & Substitutes during Remote Learning: If you need to take leave during your scheduled work day please fill out the Leave Request form, or you can email me if you are working from home. Leave that is 1.5 hours or less will be excused and not counted against you (please do not abuse this). Any leave that is 1.5 hours or more, you will need to enter it in the Frontline system but you will mark "No Sub Needed" during remote learning. District is not approving subs during remote learning so we will have to make a plan for your live instruction coverage while you are out. Please have all leave approved just as you would if we were working under normal circumstances. Don't hesitate to reach out to me or Pam if you have any specific questions.
