Week of 12/14 - 12/18

Hey Panda Family,

Week 18 is all wrapped up with a red ribbon and bow 🎁 Going forward, in the Weekly Wrap all the new updates will be at the top and all important reminders from previous WWs will be highlighted in their own section. I hope this helps organize the WW information better for you :) We hope everyone has a wonderful winter break. Take time to rest, relax, and recharge! Be safe in your family gatherings and have a Happy Holidays! 🎄🕎⛄

Teacher Workday Reminder: December 21, January 7, and January 8 are Teacher Workdays. You must work from the school building or take the day off. If you plan to take these days off please don't forget to put them in the system. If you are planning to take all three days off you will need to get it approved.

COVID-19 Vaccine (from district): The Forsyth County Department of Public Health is prioritizing educators for an upcoming round of COVID-19 vaccines. In an effort to assist the Forsyth County Department of Public Health, if you are interested in receiving the vaccine from the Forsyth County Department of Public Health, please indicate your interest in the survey link below.  Simply add your name, work location, and the email address with which you want them to contact you once the vaccine is available.

We will share this information with the Forsyth County Department of Public Health, and they will contact you with details and more information whenever the vaccination becomes available to area educators.  In order to be included in this round, you must sign up.  At this time, only those who work for WS/FCS are eligible for the vaccine from the Forsyth County Department of Public Health regardless of where you live.

**Side note - I plan to get the vaccine and have already signed up**

Virtual Holiday Bingo: If you would like to be entered into the drawing for the $25 gift cards please make sure you send me or Leslie photos/videos of your completed board by tomorrow, Monday (12/21).

Staff Holiday Poem: Staff Holiday Poem

Instructional Assistant PD Opportunities: On January 8th,  the district will offer optional PD again for Teacher Assistants, because this is an RS day and a day that teacher assistants do not work, we are offering a stipend of $75 for at least 5 hours of participation in district level PD.  Access to Teacher Assistant sessions can be found here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1YjnQ5_WXW6uQZs3uVZTC9nkq9qgR5NrxquCC92nHdo8/edit?usp=sharing

Middle-of-Year PDP conferences: The sign-up for Mid-Year PDP meetings are hanging up outside mine and Leslie's office. We will be doing all mid-year PDP meetings on Wednesdays in January via Zoom (1/13, 1/20, 1/27). Please sign up with me if I do your walkthroughs/evaluations & please sign up with Leslie if she does yours.

Make sure your Mid-Year PDP is updated before we meet. This includes your progress to date on your goals, as well as any artifacts that you want to upload that show evidence towards completion.

Teacher/Staff Laptop Distribution: See email from Elkins for all the details.  Here are the highlights:
  • Teachers and staff are responsible for backing up existing data from their old laptops.
  • Teachers and staff must turn in their old laptop and charging adapter to receive a new laptop.

Tech Tip from Tim: Teachers, given that you will soon be exchanging your old laptops out for your new ones, you will need to back up content from your old one as soon as possible.  There is no better time than over Christmas Break. You can do this however you desire, but a quick, easy way to backup files is using OneDrive. I am including a link to a short how-to video below. Of course, you can also backup content using Google Drive, or a USB flash drive. If you need a flash drive, please see Mrs. Gardner as she a few spare ones that you can use. Which ever method you use, please do not wait until the last minute to do this. Once you turn your laptop in, all files saved directly to your laptop will be gone forever.

If you should have any questions or concerns after watching the video, please feel free to contact Timothy or Stephanie for further assistance. It should also be noted that you may be prompted to start backing up said files (Desktop, Documents, and Photos). If so, please select "Start Backup".

Staff Spotlight: As I look back on the first half of the school year I want to say a huge Thank You to everyone who has stepped up to help outside of their normal role. There are too many to name individually, and I would hate to leave someone out - but thank you to those individuals who have covered classes, delivered materials, helped at car riders, delivered meals to families, helped a peer with lesson plans, and so much more! I continue to be beyond impressed and thankful for our family approach to solve problems and the willingness of individuals to step up. Thanks for all you do!

Reminders from Previous Weeks

Boosterthon T-Shirt Survey: Boosterthon needs your t-shirt size for your staff shirt. Please complete the survey to let them know - Boosterthon T-Shirt Size Survey

Winter Break Cleaning: The hallways will be shined up.  As we prepare for more students to return, every classroom will be fogged and cleaned, so please cover up items that may become damp before leaving for winter break.

Bus Attestation Forms (PreK - 5th): Please work on getting 3rd quarter bus attestation forms returned prior to winter break.  If you need copies, please ask Mrs. Landreth or Mrs. Gardner.

Working Remotely: We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.

COVID Protocols:
Due to the increased number in positive Covid cases across the county, the school district is requiring some additional safety steps. If you have been exposed to someone that tests positive you must let me know and quarantine for 14 days (these individuals will work remotely). Remember, exposure is defined by:

  • You were within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more
  • You provided care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19
  • You had direct physical contact with the person (hugged or kissed them)
  • You shared eating or drinking utensils
  • They sneezed, coughed, or somehow got respiratory droplets on you
Exposure has to be reported to Human Resources for contact tracing in case you should test positive. As a school, we are only required to communicate if we have a positive test from a staff member or student. At this time, we have not had any positive tests from staff members or from students that have been in-person. Remember the 3 W's - Wear your mask, Wash your hands, and Wait 6 feet. This will help us stay safe and healthy!

PGE Health & Safety Cheat Sheet: It was asked if we would create a document that would highlight the important health and safety protocols for Plan B. We have created a two page "Health & Safety Cheat Sheet" for you to reference during Plan B for each part of the day. A hard copy of this cheat sheet will be placed in each staff member's box. Here is the link to the Google doc if you would like to have access to the electronic version https://docs.google.com/document/d/1H8p_0GlaX-5tZRfxsRD_fjBvQvf1b-Lf6KAwYig84ko/edit?usp=sharing

Reopening Q & A:
We have created a Google doc for you to drop your questions. I have already started answering some of them. Here is the Google doc if you would like to add any questions or see the answers: Reopening Q & A

Packet Materials: I encourage each of you to continue sending out tangible packet materials for your students as needed (novels, worksheets, manipulatives, etc.). Please coordinate the pickup with your families. Every parent that I have talked with mentions how helpful it is to have a combination of tangible and virtual assignments. If the office can support you with this please let us know.

Week of 12/7 - 12/11

Hey Panda Family,

It is Week 17 and the holidays are just around the corner! Take some time this week to have some holiday fun with your students - dress up, play some games, read some festive stories 🎄🎅🕎 It is important that we work to lift everyone's cheer before the winter break. Including our own! Read below for the updates from this week, and some of the festive activities we have planned for the coming days.

PGE Covid Update 12/13/2020: On Friday evening, December 11, the PGE community (parents & staff) received communication regarding a positive Covid-19 test that occurred from one of our staff members. Please know, that if you were in close contact with this individual you were informed. We will be following all cleaning protocols and communication expectations provided to us by the district. We have had no additional positive cases since then.

Staff Meeting: We will have our December staff meeting this Tuesday, December 15 @ 3:30 via Zoom. Please use the Staff Meeting button on the PGE Canvas page to access the meeting. At this time, here is our agenda: Staff Acrostic Poems, Tech Tip from Timothy, TWC Survey Action Steps, Mastery Grading, When Can Option 1 Students Go Remote?, Performance Matters, Staff Holiday Festivities, Safety Over Winter Break.

Virtual Holiday Bingo: Tomorrow in your box there will be a Virtual Holiday Bingo Board (you can also see a picture of the board below). You have the entire week to complete all 16 squares with a picture on your phone or a video. For example, you will take a picture of yourself eating a candy cane. If you complete all 16 squares your name will go into a hat to be drawn for one of two $25 gift cards. When you complete all 16 squares come by and show me or Leslie your pictures/videos :) The game is optional, but we hope you will join in on the fun!

Christmas Trivia: Beginning Monday morning, December 14th, Timothy will send an email containing a link to a Google Form which will contain a question related to Christmas. If interested, staff members should respond to the question by 12:00 noon to be qualified for a daily prize. Given that staff members wear many hats, all participants who respond to the question correctly will be added to a randomizer. Whomever the randomizer lands on will be declared that day's winner. Doing it this way will make it fair for all versus being the first to answer correctly. One winner per day! In this season of giving, please give everyone a chance to win. In other words, if you win on Monday, please refrain from participating in the daily trivia contests throughout the week.

PTA Breakfast: This Thursday, December 17 our fabulous PTA will be "hosting" breakfast for the staff! Items will be individually wrapped and set up the day prior in the staff workroom. It will look very similar to the snack bar that they created for us at the beginning of the year. On Thursday, please come by and help yourself to a breakfast item or two!

Boosterthon T-Shirt Survey: Boosterthon needs your t-shirt size for your staff shirt. Please complete the survey to let them know - Boosterthon T-Shirt Size Survey

United Way Update: Thank you to Ms. Ballou & Ms. Mathis for organizing our United Way fundraiser this year. We met our school goal with a final total of $1,356 dollars raised, and we exceeded our 25% participation goal. We had 36% of staff participate. Thank you to everyone who helped us reach our goals! Way to go Pandas! 🐼

School Family Updates: Please keep Mr. John (Bonnie's John) in your thoughts and prayers on Monday. He is having open heart surgery. Also, celebrate with Ms. True as her father was finally able to come home after a 3-month hospital stint. And lastly, Donnay and I are excited to announce that in June we will be adding to our family. She is due June 23. We are super excited!

December Spirit Week: Please join in the fun as we finish up the last few days before winter break - December Spirit Week

December Drills: Due to rain in the forecast for tomorrow, our community lockdown and fire drill will be moved to Tuesday, December 15th at 2:00. We will start with community lockdown.

Gardner.

Middle-of-year PDP conferences: Conferences need to be completed by February 3rd.  Elkins and Gardner will post sign-up sheets near their doors after winter break.

Working Remotely: We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.

CARES Team Update (from Ms. Ceglowski): We are working to help you and your students with all possible needs. If you need help, please reach out and we will do whatever we can to help!

Lend a Hand!: Our PreK, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade staff are doing an amazing job with our in-person students. Managing a concurrent classroom, the cleaning protocols, and the added instruction is no small task. If you are willing, sign up below to lend a hand to one of these classrooms! Cover their recess for a day or two, watch their kids during lunch, or just drop in for 5 minutes so they can use the bathroom :) Any little bit goes a long way!

Instructions: If you are willing to help, click this link, and place your name beside one of the classrooms. Then reach out to that teacher to compare schedules to see when you could help them out. Multiple people can sign up for the same class. More hands make it easier to help!

Tech Tip from Tim: Would you like to create interactive, self-grading, formative assessments withing Canvas? How about creating a quiz with the reading passage on one side of the screen with questions on the other? Well, it is time to try "New Quizzes" in Canvas! Check out the videos below OR book and appointment with me to get started! Remember, you can book a time with me on Tuesdays and Thursdays by going to https://tdyounts.youcanbook.me/.

Week of 11/30 - 12/4

Hey Panda Family,

Week 16 is beginning to look very festive! I hope you and your family are enjoying the holiday cheer that this season brings 🔔⛄ Thank you for your hard work while I am absent. My return date is this Friday, December 11 (barring no changes). It is such a blessing to know the school and our students are well taken care of no matter what the situation! I can't thank each of you enough, and thank you to everyone who has assumed additional duties as we tackle the obstacles of this virus together. You rock!

PGE Covid Update 12/6/2020: This evening the PGE community (parents & staff) will be receiving communication regarding a positive Covid-19 test that has occurred from one of our staff members. Please know, that if you were in close contact with the individual you have already been informed. We will be following all cleaning protocols and communication expectations provided to us by the district.

Working Remotely: Before this past week I had allowed a few individuals to work remotely when they had family emergencies arise (in an effort to be flexible). Unfortunately, all principals were told this past week in our principal meeting that this is not allowed. We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.

Schedule Change: Please adjust your schedule for the following change. To accommodate our Boosterthon team, we will be adjusting our Staff Meeting date for January. Our January staff meeting will take place on Tuesday, January 26 @ 3:30 via Zoom. The main focus of this staff meeting will be the Boosterthon team preparing the staff for the fundraiser. SCC & Wellness will be moved to Tuesday, January 19. Thank you for making this adjustment.

Update from Iris (School Psychologist): As you all know, this holiday season is very different than previous years, both for staff and families. I know many of us have lost a loved one or have other challenges that have to be dealt with right now. A fellow school psychologist wrote a Blog Post with resources that you may find helpful for yourselves and to share with families. The blog, also has many other resources (COVID and otherwise) you may find useful. I am thinking about all of you throughout the season. I am so proud of how hard you have all worked over the past 9 months to support families, students, and each other. Please remember to take some time to support yourselves as well.

Flex Spending Changes (from district): We are excited to inform you of changes made to the current and future Flexible Spending Account Plans. Please review this linkIf you have questions, please contact Director of Benefits, Teresa Brown, tabrown@wsfcs.k12.nc.us

Winter Weather Notifications (from district): We have updated district guidance, timelines, and guidelines related to weather delays/closures/move to remote learning. Please share this with staff, the district will share it with students via Peachjar.

Bus Attestation Forms (PreK - 5th): Please work on getting 3rd quarter bus attestation forms returned prior to winter break.  If you need copies, please ask Mrs. Landreth or Mrs. Gardner.

December Drills: Weather permitting, our community lockdown and fire drill will take place Monday, December 14th at 8:30 or right after car riders is completed. We will start with community lockdown.

PBIS Spirit Week: We have made some adjustments to spirit week to have similar ideas as kindergarten and first grades. The list to share with your students/parents will be sent out by mid-week.

CARES Team Update (from Ms. Ceglowski):
  • We have compiled a list of all student names provided by teachers to us as completing less than 50% of work in the most recent engagement survey. We broke it down into three categories including EC, ELL, and others.  The other category was our focus this week and we divided the list among us to give phone calls/make contact and see if we can help identify barriers and work on mitigating those barriers.  There were very few names we had not yet discussed but we are focusing on those new names to see what we can learn.
  • We anxiously await hearing from K/1/EC teachers to give us some direction on how CARES should look as students return to the building.
  • Several families have already been provided holiday financial support.  Mrs. Landreth is amazing at soliciting donations and keeping track of where they go.  Let us know if you think a family may be in need this Christmas.  I'll do the reach out!

Tech Tip from Tim: In this month's edition of Timothy's Technology Corner newsletter, I have provided you with several resources that I believe will be valuable to you and your students. In the season of giving, I wanted to share as many things as possible.

Here are the headlines in this month's edition:

From Ms. Ceglowski - A
buse, suicide ideation, and general mental health issues are starting to really ramp up as usual around the holidays.  It's definitely going to look different this year and likely be more pronounced.  It may also be harder to detect.  Shout out to the 3 teachers who reached out with concern over their students on Friday.  Please do not hesitate to reach out and follow your gut!!!  If a student tells you something, you see something, or something just doesn't seem right, trust your instincts!    Love you, mean it!
