Week of 2/15 - 2/19

Hey Panda Family,

We made it through what is hopefully the last full week of remote learning! We had a fun time participating in the Spirit Week challenges, and as you can see by the pictures below so did some of our Pandas 😂 There is quite a bit of information listed in this week's Weekly Wrap. As always, don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions and thank you for all you do! 💚🐼

This was on my quote calendar for today and I thought I should share:

"To best care for others, don't forget to care for yourself."

Make sure to do something for yourself today!

Specially Called Meeting: MTSS Corrective Action PD on Wednesday, February 24 @ 3:30.  We will use the staff meeting link.  You will complete an attendance form during our meeting. Plan for 45 minutes. We were just informed of these requirements in the past week and were given a short turn-around time. There are test questions that go along with the training, so we thought it would be easiest to complete this together. See the link below for which staff members need to attend.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1qyu75_g_nLms1h_ls4y2VUtFLkL1zGyZUMK-nrNuiq4/edit?usp=sharing

Observations: The last round of observations will begin this month.  They will be unannounced, however we will give you a two-week heads-up so please look for an email. Our goal is to have all observations completed by April 30, 2021.  Please have your green Growth Notebooks readily available for us to look through.

Retention Letters: We are in the process of getting potential retention letters in the hands of parents. These letters should be signed and returned by Friday, February 26. For your remote students that are receiving a letter, we will work with you to get it delivered. If you have retention candidates and have not received your letters yet, you will be getting them tomorrow. When you get the retention notice/letter signed by the parent, please return it to Mr. Elkins.

Box Lunch for Staff: To celebrate us meeting our Boosterthon goal, the PTA is serving a box lunch meal to the staff this Thursday, February 25. More info to come!

Progress Reports: Progress Reports for 3rd Quarter should go home the week of March 1 - 5. Please make sure you are updating your grades in PowerSchool for your parents to see. We will use the same procedures for progress reports as we did the first two quarters. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Grubbs.

iReady Lesson Tracking: As your students complete their iReady each week, it is not only important that they get their time in but it is also important to see their lesson completion. What we have seen is some students are getting their time in each week, but are not completing any lessons (basically they are just sitting there). I highly suggest motivating your students in your classroom by giving incentives for lessons completed. If you would like to monitor the lessons completed for your students, simply follow these instructions that were shared by Ms. Jones (thanks Deana!).

iReady Lesson Tracking

Math Fact Grade Level Goals: One of our SIT goals for next year is to implement our Math Fact Fluency Goals by grade level school-wide. Because of the pandemic, we postponed this school-wide goal until next year. We wanted to share these goals with you, because SIT thought it would be fun and worthwhile for you to work on them with your students as a class or make a grade level competition. Fluency in grade level math facts is a need across the entire building, so we definitely believe working towards these goals with your students will be very beneficial.

Read Across America Spirit Week (March 1 - 5): Please join us as we celebrate reading! See the daily details below:
  • Monday, March 1 - Ready to Read (wear red)

  • Tuesday, March 2 - Hats Off to Reading (favorite hat)

  • Wednesday, March 3 - Wacky Socks (Wacky Wednesday)

  • Thursday, March 4 - Oh, the Places You’ll Go (college shirts)

  • Friday, March 5 - PJ Day (cozy up with a good book)

Specials Inclusion: Mrs. Murphy's students will begin attending specials with grades 1 and 3. Teachers who needed this information received an email on 2/15 from Mrs. Gardner. If you have questions please reach out to Ms. Gardner.

Kindergarten Registration Day (Rescheduled): This Wednesday, February 24 from 10:00 - 7:00 is the rescheduled Kindergarten Registration Day district-wide. We will be allowing families to enter the building as we help them register their child for Kindergarten. All visitors will be screened and required to wear a mask while in the building.

Picture Day (from Ms. Willis): Pictures will be in the media center with two photographers on 2/23 & 2/25.  Teachers please be near the photographers so they can get the correct name of the students.  When we did K/1, the photographers asked the students their names and then found the closest name to what they heard.  We had several student's pictures come back with the wrong name or they didn't get a package at all because the payment didn't match a name.

CARES Team Update (from Ms. Ceglowski): We are working on creating a contract for families of remote learners to help address the lack of communication from some parents and lack of work and participation from some of our students.  We will share once we have this document finalized.

A parent shared a great resource with me from First Christian Church:

Virtual Learning Hub
@ First Christian Church Kernersville, NC
The Virtual Learning Hub exists to fill a need in our community due to Covid-19 and will provide a safe, clean learning environment for independent learning and safe socialization. The hub is led by Jennifer Frame, a certified teacher (NC K-12) who has worked as an educator for 15+ years in various settings. Her most recent experience includes the position of lead teacher at a learning hub in Guilford County. At the learning hub, teachers will assist students in logging into their remote learning sessions, staying on task, completing their assignments, encouraging their best work, and answering their questions (curriculum not provided). Teachers will also be there to create a sense of community, foster safe socialization, and facilitate free time activities as needed. Daily cleaning and disinfecting procedures are in place. Class size is limited by room square footage and social distancing guidelines. Liability waiver must be signed by a parent/guardian for student admission to this program.

Mask policy:
Our current NC executive order requires all staff, parents, and students over the age of 4 to wear a cloth face covering. Anyone who cannot wear a mask due to developmental, medical, or behavioral health needs is exempt.
Illness protocol:
Teacher(s), parents, and students should know the symptoms of COVID-
Parents should notify the learning hub and contact healthcare providers if anyone in their household develops symptoms of COVID-19 or any other illness and students will be asked to stay home until they are symptom-free for 72 hours. Any student who becomes unwell during the school day will wait in a designated area until a parent or guardian can arrive. Students or teacher(s) who test positively for COVID-19 will follow the county’s current recommendation for self-isolation. Students may take up to a two-week leave of absence and keep their place in the program. If there is a positive report of COVID-19 in our learning community, we will follow the county’s current guidelines for notifications.

*Sorry, I know that's a lot of info but I think it can be a great resource from some of our families especially those with 4 and 5th-grade students.*

Timothy's Technology Corner: Here is this week's content for Timothy's Technology Corner:

Takeaways from Gerry Brooks' Keynote Message: On Thursday, I attended the virtual keynote address for Kami Connect, which was the only reason I signed up. The presenter was none other than Gerry Brooks. I am sure that everyone can identify with his hilarious videos, but when he speaks at conferences, he has a serious, but relevant tone. As a former youth minister, Brooks uses objects to drive home points that he wants attendees to remember. He used several objects, but there are few I would like to share out with you.
  • Light Switch:  Go to Lowe's or Home Depot, buy you an inexpensive light switch. Use the switch as a reminder that you need to switch off your professional brain in the evenings and on the weekends and leave it off so you can focus on you and your family. If you do not turn off your professional brain, you will become burned out.
  • Reading Glasses: Purchase a few pairs of reading glasses from Dollar Tree where everything is $1.00. Each time you look at those glasses, remind yourself to examine situations though the lenses of others (parents, students, friends, other colleagues, etc.). It may be a good idea to label the glasses for lens you need to look through.
  • Girl Scout Cookies, Peeps, Conversation Hearts, Pumpkins Spice Lattes: What do all these things have in common? You guessed it; they are all seasonal. If you want these things in August, you have stock up on them and save them for later. We are currently in a season. The COVID pandemic is not going to be around forever, so stay the course and embrace the season. In the end, we will all become better educators. The negative things of the season will go away, but the positive things will grow us as individuals and evolve educational practices that we once knew.
Awesome Resources:
  • GregTangMath: This is "a revolutionary, online math program comprised of games, animated books, and downloadable materials". The site has several games to select from, but one is NumTanga which students must recognize and match the numbers based on the numerical symbol, word, and/or number of objects. An added feature of this game is that the level of difficulty increases as students advance from level to level. Even for me, it was challenging at times since there is a time limit in which you must respond. Check out the site and let me know what you think!
  • Jamming Jamboards:
    • How many fish?Celebrate Read Across America with an activity based on Dr. Seuss' "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish".
    • Women's History Month: March is the month that is set aside to commemorate the significant impact and influence that some women have had on society.
    • Teacher Made: Last week, I shared out this resource. During this past week of remote learning, I was able to play around with it some and concluded that this is something that you all will find very useful. As of now, this is a free alternative to Kami , especially since Kami is not a favorite of some of my fellow ITFs. Like Kami, Teacher Made allows you to turn worksheets/printables, etc. into digital activities. You can add the external Teacher Made app to Canvas in which you can assign activities and grade them using Speedgrader, which is my understanding is a benefit that Kami does not allow you to do. Take advantage of this resource while it is still free. To learn how to add this app to Cavas, click on the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tjthwicAnk. If you have any questions, please see me or any third-grade teacher for more details.
Gold Star Award: This is the second week in which these awards are being presented. I thoroughly enjoy recognizing individuals for responding to my requests as well as sharing successes with the implementation of resources that I have recently shared with the staff.

This week's awards go to:
  • Natalie Rempe for responding back to me regarding the phonics applications that I shared with the staff in last week's Weekly Wrap.
  • Anna Crisp for inviting me to read to her class.
  • Deana Jones, Stephanie Epperley, Denette Staley, and Eileen Corlett was among the first staff members to join my Technology Corner Canvas course.
Congratulations to these educators I look forward to recognizing others for their success in the coming weeks! To be eligible for next week's awards, invite me to your classroom to observe a lesson, read to you students, or work on a math skill, etc.

Reminders from Previous Weeks

Positive/Exposed Covid-19 Students: Some parents are only contacting the teacher when their child has tested positive and/or been exposed to Covid-19. If you have a parent reach out to you in regards to their child testing positive and/or being exposed, please make sure they also let myself or Ms. Gardner know too. They can call, email, or message us on Dojo and we will follow-up. For every exposure and positive case we have to fill out specific information for the district. Thanks so much for your help with this!

Substitutes: Since returning to in-person learning, when you are out of work you will need to enter your absence and request a sub.  If you are a TA you have to be out 3 days before getting a sub unless it is Covid related.  You can get a sub on the first day of a Covid related absence.  Elaine Christopher is our Covid sub so we need to save her for Covid absences.  Elaine can do normal sub jobs on Fridays. If you have any questions please touch base with Ms. Willis.

Fire Marshall: Our Spring Fire Marshall Inspection is coming up.  We passed in the Fall thanks to our Panda teamwork.  See the reminders below:

  • Keep doors unblocked (6 blocks/feet)
  • Fire exit door should not be propped open
  • Keep fire extinguishers unblocked
  • No extension cords
  • Storage - 2 full blocks clear from the ceiling

Arts Council: CLICK HERE to make a gift by cash, check or payroll deduction to the Arts Council. The Arts Council supports the wonderful arts programs throughout our district.

Posted Daily Schedule: As we begin in-person Classroom Walkthroughs, please make sure the schedule that is posted outside your classroom door is updated and reflects your in-person schedule.

3rd Quarter Specials: Below is the link for 3rd quarter specials. There is a separate specials schedule for February 15-19. This is a Remote Learning Week.  We will use the old Remote Learning schedule.  (More details to come)

PAW Forms: Don't forget the protocols for using PAW Forms. If a student gets 3 checks in a week you need to have a phone conversation with the parent regarding the child's behavior. If a student accrues 6 behavior checks in a week then it becomes an office referral. You must have a conversation with the parent via phone before it becomes an office referral. We want to give our parents every opportunity to help us correct the problem.

Yearbook Pictures: Please go through your phone and begin sending Ms. True some good pictures of your students for the yearbook. We certainly understand these pictures will look much different this year, but we still want to capture these memories whether they be remote or in-person. You can text her pictures at 336-403-0458.

Lesson Plans: In an effort to not add something else to your plate, we are going to be very flexible with lesson plans for the remainder of this school year. Even as you transition to concurrent teaching (in-person & remote) your Canvas page can serve as your "plans". Ms. Gardner and I will use your Canvas page to locate your standards and "I Can" statements for each week & subject. Remember the key components of Modeled, Guided, Independent, and Assessment as you plan your week. While we may not be checking for formal lesson plans at this time, it is still important that you have your own plans in place to guide your instruction.

School-Wide Packet Pickup: We would like to coordinate a school-wide packet pickup day each week for all grade levels to best help our parents (this way our parents that have kids in multiple grade levels can get all materials in one trip). If you are preparing tangible packets for pickup please have them out and ready by the end of business day on Thursdays. This way parents have Friday and the weekend to pick up any materials needed for the next week. This is effective immediately. Thank you for your help with this!

Working Remotely: We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.

COVID Protocols:
Due to the increased number in positive Covid cases across the county, the school district is requiring some additional safety steps. If you have been exposed to someone that tests positive you must let me know and quarantine for 14 days (these individuals will work remotely). Remember, exposure is defined by:

  • You were within 6 feet of someone who has COVID-19 for a total of 15 minutes or more
  • You provided care at home to someone who is sick with COVID-19
  • You had direct physical contact with the person (hugged or kissed them)
  • You shared eating or drinking utensils
  • They sneezed, coughed, or somehow got respiratory droplets on you
Exposure has to be reported to Human Resources for contact tracing in case you should test positive. Remember the 3 W's - Wear your mask, Wash your hands, and Wait 6 feet. This will help us stay safe and healthy!

PGE Health & Safety Cheat Sheet: It was asked if we would create a document that would highlight the important health and safety protocols for Plan B. We have created a two page "Health & Safety Cheat Sheet" for you to reference during Plan B for each part of the day. A hard copy of this cheat sheet will be placed in each staff member's box. Here is the link to the Google doc if you would like to have access to the electronic version https://docs.google.com/document/d/1H8p_0GlaX-5tZRfxsRD_fjBvQvf1b-Lf6KAwYig84ko/edit?usp=sharing

IF Updates

Computers needed: We will need to gather up computers from about 9:45-11:45 on March 1, 2, 4, 5 for 2nd grade CogAt testing.  We will make every effort to quickly get them back to you after testing so you will have access to them in the morning and in the afternoon.  Thank you for understanding!

ACCESS testing: ACCESS testing starts MONDAY!  Just FYI, all ELL students must take a battery of 4 tests for the ACCESS and each test lasts an hour.  The first two tests, listening and reading, are given according to grade level.  The next test is differentiated based on performance on the first two.  What does this mean?  There can be a LOT of different groups! As you can imagine, this is a huge undertaking.  We are so fortunate that Mrs. Pereda is so dedicated to helping her students have the best testing situations possible. Because of this, Mrs. Pereda will be pulling groups for testing and not seeing her regular groups for the time being.  I have tried to make testing the least obtrusive to your daily schedule, but that was not always possible. Here is the schedule.  I will keep this updated as we progress through testing.  The testing window goes through mid-April, but we are hoping to finish up in March.

NCELAREADS now open: DPI is holding a two-week study to help explore reading digital, complex texts.  Given the current conditions and increased use of technology, teachers are using more digital text in the classroom.  We will explore learning to read, close read, and reading volume.  In our instruction, more attention may be needed with helping students to read these digital, complex texts.  Click here to join this group.  Several Panda teachers are participating, and I can’t wait to see what we learn together!  Since all EOGs will be online this year, this PD is more important than EVER!

Update Testing Dates: Please make sure you update your calendar for your grade level test dates.
