Week of 4/12 - 4/16

Hey Panda Family,

I hope you had a wonderful week back with your students! I encourage you to celebrate Earth Day this week in some creative ways - have class outside, create a nature scavenger hunt for your kids during recess, do a community service project 🌎 Find ways to celebrate our unique planet! Here are the Weekly Wrap updates:

April Staff Meeting: Reminder that our April staff meeting has been moved to 3:30 this Wednesday, April 21 so it doesn't conflict with afterschool tutoring. Please use the staff meeting link on the PGE Canvas page to access the meeting.

Teacher Choice Form (K-5 Teachers Only): Please complete the following form to let me know your desired grade level for the 2021-2022 school year: Teacher Choice Form 2021-2022. The form should be completed by Friday, April 23.

CARES Team and Counselor Update (from Ms. Ceglowski):
  • Please continue to refer any students who are not engaged in learning.
  • A lot of information has been made available regarding summer school options There are a ton of programs Here is a link to a page with all the options.  https://www.wsfcs.k12.nc.us/Page/119726
  • I see a lot of materials waiting out front waiting to be picked up.  Please let me know if you need assistance with this after verifying that the parent cannot get to the school.
  • Behavior concerns are on the rise as the students get more comfortable in the building.  It's also Spring Fever time!  So, be kind to yourself and reach out if you need help.  Hang in there!
  • Check out the link below for some Spring Survival Tips...

  • Finally, the district has just asked us to complete another Panorama Survey. This is the survey where we learn about our school's climate. We are just now delving into the data from the Winter survey in SIT and I am so excited to share what we have learned!  It is not typical to complete another survey this soon but as they say, "unprecedented times" Thanks for hanging in there with me and knocking this out.  Here are the details:
The window is open until 4/30 for students, families, and staff.

Staff: You have received a link directly from "Panorama Education" via email just like last time, if you don't have it, let me know and I'll get you one.   I believe you will get some time in our next staff meeting to complete but it would be great for you to search for it prior to then so you know you got the link.  Thanks!

Students: I will do the student surveys with grades 3 and 5 during specials.  4th grade, you have options: 1. I can come to your room to administer the survey.  2. You can administer it yourself  (I'll get you what you need it takes about 30 to 40 minutes), or you can assign it as a Wednesday task.

Families: The district is sharing the link and I will ask Mr. Elkins to share it as well.  Here is the link if you would like to add it to your newsletter or CANVAS page, or wherever it works.

Timothy's Technology Corner:

  • Newsela: Great News!!! The district has purchased a subscription to Newsela! This a great resource for highly engaging, nonfiction articles with leveled text in Social Studies, ELA, and Science. You will be able to access and create assignments in Canvas. ITFs were trained in our meeting on Friday. If you want to learn more about this resource, let me know. I will plan a more formal training before we get started with the 2021-22 school year.

  • Canva for Education: Did you know that Canva premium features are free with Canva for Education? Canva is a design tool to engage, collaborate, and promote creativity in the classroom. The cool thing about Canva for Education is that they are partnering up with Canvas to integrate an external app that jives with each other. To register for a Canva for Education account, click on the following link: https://www.canva.com/education/Again, if you have any questions about this resource, let me know. To learn more about Canva for Education, watch the following tutorial: Canva for Education: Tutorial for Teachers.

Staff Spotlight: Shoutout to Ms. Epperley, Ms. Secrest, and Ms. Jones for their hard work with our Battle of the Books team! Our team advanced to the second round of the district competition! Way to go, Pandas! 📚

Reminders from Previous Weeks

4th Quarter Specials: Here is the link for the first week of 4th quarter specials. 4th quarter- Specials Schedule- Week 1 Below is the link for the remainder of 4th quarter (after spring break). We will have an alternate schedule during EOG week. 4th quarter specials

Positive/Exposed Covid-19 Students: Some parents are only contacting the teacher when their child has tested positive and/or been exposed to Covid-19. If you have a parent reach out to you in regards to their child testing positive and/or being exposed, please make sure they also let myself or Ms. Gardner know too. They can call, email, or message us on Dojo and we will follow-up. For every exposure and positive case we have to fill out specific information for the district. Thanks so much for your help with this!

Remote Students Returning to In-Person: We have decided not to wait until 4th quarter to communicate to all remote parents that their child can return to in-person learning. Please send the following message to your fully-remote students via Dojo (you can let them know it is from Mr. Elkins):

Hey Pandas! Effective immediately, your child may return to full in-person learning if you so choose. Any remote students that want to immediately return to in-person learning will need to be a car rider, use a morning/afternoon daycare van, or go to Imprints. If your child needs bus transportation, please contact the front office to get it arranged before your child plans to return to in-person learning (bus transportation is only available for residential students). If your child will be a car rider, please ask your teacher for a pink car rider sign. Students returning to in-person learning are committing to all 4 days of in-person learning each week. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact the front office at 336-703-4122.

- Mr. Elkins

If parents decide to send their child back for in-person learning please let Ms. True know who the student is and when they will begin in-person learning.

Student Attendance: For students to be counted present on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays they must attend in-person if they are an in-person student or they must attend remotely if they are a remote student. Students should not be counted present for work completion only on M/T/Th/F if they did not attend class. They may be counted present for work completion on Flex Wednesdays.

Morning Arrival: This is just a friendly reminder that all staff need to enter through the front entrance of the building first & complete the temperature check and screening before reporting to your room. Thank you for your help with this.

Lesson Plans: In an effort to not add something else to your plate, we are going to be very flexible with lesson plans for the remainder of this school year. Even as you transition to concurrent teaching (in-person & remote) your Canvas page can serve as your "plans". Ms. Gardner and I will use your Canvas page to locate your standards and "I Can" statements for each week & subject. Remember the key components of Modeled, Guided, Independent, and Assessment as you plan your week. While we may not be checking for formal lesson plans at this time, it is still important that you have your own plans in place to guide your instruction.

School-Wide Packet Pickup: We would like to coordinate a school-wide packet pickup day each week for all grade levels to best help our parents (this way our parents that have kids in multiple grade levels can get all materials in one trip). If you are preparing tangible packets for pickup please have them out and ready by the end of business day on Thursdays. This way parents have Friday and the weekend to pick up any materials needed for the next week. This is effective immediately. Thank you for your help with this!

Working Remotely: We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.
