Week of 5/3 - 5/7

Hey Panda Family,

Less than a month of school to go! Let the countdown officially begin 😊 As we celebrate Mother's Day, please don't ever overlook how important your motherly role is to our students each day. We are their home away from home, and your impact in their life and their growth is paramount (some of our kids spend more waking time with us than they do their own family!). Thank you for all you do! Here are the Weekly Wrap updates:

In-Person Meetings: The district has approved us to resume having meetings in-person! We must still practice social distancing and be masked, but this is definitely something to celebrate. We will continue to have our staff meetings via Zoom for the remainder of the year. Jayne will reach out to your grade level regarding PLTs.

SIT Meeting: SIT will meet this Tuesday, May 11 @ 3:30 in the Media Center.

The Teacher Contest: We have one more fun Teacher Appreciation activity for you this week, The Teacher Contest! On Wednesday, May 12 you will receive an email with all the contest details and your team for the week-long game. Your team, which will consist of other staff members, will work together to accomplish fun missions. We look forward to this exciting team-building game! SCC will be providing gift card prizes to the winning team! Good luck!

Ms. Murray's Birthday: Ms. Murray's Birthday is Monday, May 17. We really encourage you and your class to do something special for her on this day. Ms. Murray does so much for our school, all as a volunteer. Please join us in celebrating her on her birthday. Thanks!

Field Trips: Your grade level may begin scheduling field trips for next school year. Please do not put down any deposits at this time. Please make sure to communicate with other grade levels and Ms. Gardner when scheduling your field trips. Different grade levels going on the same field trips to the same locations will not be approved (i.e. three different grade levels all going to Old Salem).

PDP & Summative Conferences: All certified staff should have received an email from myself or Ms. Gardner regarding PDP & Summative Conferences. Please make sure you read this email and sign up for a time slot. Sign-up sheets are outside our office doors. Before our meeting, you should have your PDP updated with evidence and marked "complete".  Please do this at least 2 days before our meeting.  Also, have your green notebook updated.  We will collect these so we can refer to them when adding comments to both the PDP and Summary Evaluation.

CARES & Counselor Updates (from Ms. Ceglowski):

  • CARES will meet this Wednesday, May 12. Please email/text Ceglowski with any engagement concerns.
  • Some have expressed concern about getting materials returned from remote students.  To make it easier, I'd like to get a complete list of what needs to be collected so that Ms. Davis and I can consolidate our efforts.  So, if you have books or other materials that need to make it back to PGE and you are aware of transportation issues, please let me know.
Counselor Updates
  • If none of these dates/times work, just email me and we will figure something out!
Grades 3 and 5 can just email me what you want me to address and I'll do it in my regularly scheduled specials time.

Timothy's Technology Corner:

  • Timothy’s Technology Corner Newsletter: The May edition provides a little bit of everything including something new, something old, something to think about going forward, along with some encouraging words, and a little bit of humor to assist you in dealing with the hecticness of these next few weeks. The headlines in this edition include:

    • Coming Soon: Newsela 101

    • Moving Forward with Canvas

    • Encouraging Words from Gerry Brooks

    • Stress-Relieving Humor

    • Where is Timothy? (May Calendar)

  • Canvas Tips Contest: Thanks to Leigh Hopkins, ITF at Kernersville Elementary and Middle for the idea. It is so good that I must do this myself! - As we are wrapping up the 2020-21 school year, think about all the things you have accomplished! You have created some amazing resources and lessons that are in Canvas ready to be copied into next year’s courses.

    • Take a minute and share your Canvas Quick Tip in this form. I will share this with everyone in an upcoming newsletter. (For all who submit at least one tip, names will be put into a drawing for a prize!)

Staff Spotlight: From Ms. Ceglowski - Thank you to Ms. Jones for her help with car rider dismissal this past week!

From Mr. Elkins - Thank you for the kind thoughts and notes regarding the passing of my grandmother. It meant a lot to know you were thinking of my family.

Shout-out to Ms. Vaden for getting a Donor's Choose project funded! Great work, Kayla!

Reminders from Previous Weeks

4th Quarter Specials: Here is the link for the first week of 4th quarter specials. 4th quarter- Specials Schedule- Week 1 Below is the link for the remainder of 4th quarter (after spring break). We will have an alternate schedule during EOG week. 4th quarter specials

Positive/Exposed Covid-19 Students: Some parents are only contacting the teacher when their child has tested positive and/or been exposed to Covid-19. If you have a parent reach out to you in regards to their child testing positive and/or being exposed, please make sure they also let myself or Ms. Gardner know too. They can call, email, or message us on Dojo and we will follow-up. For every exposure and positive case we have to fill out specific information for the district. Thanks so much for your help with this!

Remote Students Returning to In-Person: We have decided not to wait until 4th quarter to communicate to all remote parents that their child can return to in-person learning. Please send the following message to your fully-remote students via Dojo (you can let them know it is from Mr. Elkins):

Hey Pandas! Effective immediately, your child may return to full in-person learning if you so choose. Any remote students that want to immediately return to in-person learning will need to be a car rider, use a morning/afternoon daycare van, or go to Imprints. If your child needs bus transportation, please contact the front office to get it arranged before your child plans to return to in-person learning (bus transportation is only available for residential students). If your child will be a car rider, please ask your teacher for a pink car rider sign. Students returning to in-person learning are committing to all 4 days of in-person learning each week. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact the front office at 336-703-4122.

- Mr. Elkins

If parents decide to send their child back for in-person learning please let Ms. True know who the student is and when they will begin in-person learning.

Student Attendance: Managing student attendance this year has been such a rollercoaster. The guidance from the district is constantly changing. Luckily, we only have a few more weeks of remote learning and managing concurrent attendance. See below for the latest guidance from district. To be clear, I do not expect you to prepare materials for in-person students that are out on a moment's notice and participate virtually. See below:

Please share this clarification regarding taking attendance of the students, especially now that more students have returned to school.  Our goal is to indicate “Present or 1R” for all students who engage in daily instruction.

PowerSchool indicators:

  • Leave blank, if “Present”- All students who engage in face-to-face learning.
  • Indicate 1R- For all Remote learners who participate in instruction, both those who are full-time remote students and those you may be home for quarantine or learning from home on specific dates.
  • Mark Absent- Any student who is not present for either in-person or online learning.

We want all students learning and not excluded.  Please do not exclude students from joining their classes, if they are supposed to be in school, but are logging in from home on a given day.  We want all students learning and not excluded.  In-person learners should email or call their teacher if they will be learning from home on a particular day and indicate the reason why.  If they join remotely, they are present (1R).

Lesson Plans: In an effort to not add something else to your plate, we are going to be very flexible with lesson plans for the remainder of this school year. Even as you transition to concurrent teaching (in-person & remote) your Canvas page can serve as your "plans". Ms. Gardner and I will use your Canvas page to locate your standards and "I Can" statements for each week & subject. Remember the key components of Modeled, Guided, Independent, and Assessment as you plan your week. While we may not be checking for formal lesson plans at this time, it is still important that you have your own plans in place to guide your instruction.

School-Wide Packet Pickup: We would like to coordinate a school-wide packet pickup day each week for all grade levels to best help our parents (this way our parents that have kids in multiple grade levels can get all materials in one trip). If you are preparing tangible packets for pickup please have them out and ready by the end of business day on Thursdays. This way parents have Friday and the weekend to pick up any materials needed for the next week. This is effective immediately. Thank you for your help with this!

Working Remotely: We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.
