Hey Panda Family,

We had a super successful and fun Read Across America Week 📚 I hope you enjoyed the spirit days and the wonderful literature activities that coincided with last week! We can't wait to welcome back all our 4th graders 4-days a week starting tomorrow. Slowly but surely our whole school family is coming back together! 🙌 Here are the Weekly Wrap updates:

Extended Learning Plan Meeting on Thursday, March 11 @ 3:30: Any staff that is participating in the Extended Learning After-School tutoring needs to attend a brief meeting on Thursday, March 11 @ 3:30 to go over logistics for the program. This meeting should not last more than 20-30 minutes. We will use the staff meeting link on the PGE Canvas page.

No Staff Meeting on Tuesday, March 16: We have very few items on our staff meeting agenda for this month, and the week of March 15 is the first week for the Extended Learning Tutoring after-school. Because of this we have decided to cancel our monthly staff meeting for March. Enjoy!

My Evolving Role as an ITF: Now that the technology in your classrooms is more stabilized, I will no longer be making my daily rounds for the purpose of check-ins. Instead, I will be dropping into a few classrooms each day so that I can see what you are covering so I can better serve you in finding resources that you can implement into your routine instruction, following up with technology needs based on recent PDs, and co-teaching, etc. Just note, if you have an immediate technology need, call the front office and they can radio me on my walkie, or you can text me at the number provided below in next two points in this month's Timothy's Technology Corner.

Popcorn & PD: Mark your calendar for this Wednesday, March 10, 2021 for the kickoff of Popcorn & PD on Jamming with Jamboards in the Classroom at 10:30 am & 2:15 pm. These brief, 30 to 45-minute, informal, popup PDs will be optional, but will allow me to take the time to provide you with an overview of Jamboards, how to use them with your students, and how to get started making Jamboards of your own. So, pop yourself a bag of popcorn and join me at one of the times listed above. I will present to one individual or a large group. To get an idea of how many of you will be joining me, please see this month's Timothy's Technology Corner to sign up.

Morning Announcements: Here are the links to the Morning Announcements for this week.

Staff Spotlight: A little birdie told me to look for inspirational rocks around our campus to help brighten people's day. Be on the lookout for these fun, caring, and bright colored rocks! If you find one make sure to soak in the message on the rock and then find a new hiding place for it so it can brighten someone else's day 😊 If your student finds one that says "READ" make sure to have them turn it into Ms. Adams for a prize!

Reminders from Previous Weeks

Positive/Exposed Covid-19 Students: Some parents are only contacting the teacher when their child has tested positive and/or been exposed to Covid-19. If you have a parent reach out to you in regards to their child testing positive and/or being exposed, please make sure they also let myself or Ms. Gardner know too. They can call, email, or message us on Dojo and we will follow-up. For every exposure and positive case we have to fill out specific information for the district. Thanks so much for your help with this!

Remote Students Returning to In-Person: We have decided not to wait until 4th quarter to communicate to all remote parents that their child can return to in-person learning. Please send the following message to your fully-remote students via Dojo (you can let them know it is from Mr. Elkins):

Hey Pandas! Effective immediately, your child may return to full in-person learning if you so choose. Any remote students that want to immediately return to in-person learning will need to be a car rider, use a morning/afternoon daycare van, or go to Imprints. If your child needs bus transportation, please contact the front office to get it arranged before your child plans to return to in-person learning (bus transportation is only available for residential students). If your child will be a car rider, please ask your teacher for a pink car rider sign. Students returning to in-person learning are committing to all 4 days of in-person learning each week. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact the front office at 336-703-4122.

- Mr. Elkins

If parents decide to send their child back for in-person learning please let Ms. True know who the student is and when they will begin in-person learning.

"Minimal Social Distancing": The district is supposed to be sending out a more clear definition on what "minimal social distancing" means in the coming weeks. What we have been doing in the younger grades has been very effective. I recommend to continue to have maximum social distancing where you can (keeping desks as far apart as possible), but understand if students get closer now it is deemed okay by the NC Safe Schools Toolkit (for example sitting 3 feet from a peer for a small group lesson). In grades 4th & 5th, your student's desks will need to be placed 3 feet apart in order to fit all your students. All 4th & 5th grade teachers may work from the building on March 3 & March 10 if you so choose to work on preparing your classroom for 4-day student return.

Tornado Drill (from district): On Wednesday, March 10, at 9:30 a.m. schools and government buildings statewide will hold tornado drills to practice their emergency plans.  Since March 10 is a scheduled flex day for WS/FCS this is an opportunity to provide instruction regarding how students should react if a tornado were to occur at home. This short video and slide provide good concise information that should be shared with students as part of asynchronous instruction. https://youtu.be/_5TiTfuvotc

Math Fact Grade Level Goals: One of our SIT goals for next year is to implement our Math Fact Fluency Goals by grade level school-wide. Because of the pandemic, we postponed this school-wide goal until next year. We wanted to share these goals with you, because SIT thought it would be fun and worthwhile for you to work on them with your students as a class or make a grade level competition. Fluency in grade level math facts is a need across the entire building, so we definitely believe working towards these goals with your students will be very beneficial.

iReady Lesson Tracking: As your students complete their iReady each week, it is not only important that they get their time in but it is also important to see their lesson completion. What we have seen is some students are getting their time in each week, but are not completing any lessons (basically they are just sitting there). I highly suggest motivating your students in your classroom by giving incentives for lessons completed. If you would like to monitor the lessons completed for your students, simply follow these instructions that were shared by Ms. Jones (thanks Deana!).

iReady Lesson Tracking

Fire Marshall: Our Spring Fire Marshall Inspection is coming up.  We passed in the Fall thanks to our Panda teamwork.  See the reminders below:

  • Keep doors unblocked (6 blocks/feet)
  • Fire exit door should not be propped open
  • Keep fire extinguishers unblocked
  • No extension cords
  • Storage - 2 full blocks clear from the ceiling

3rd Quarter Specials: Below is the link for 3rd quarter specials. There is a separate specials schedule for February 15-19. This is a Remote Learning Week.  We will use the old Remote Learning schedule.  (More details to come)

Lesson Plans: In an effort to not add something else to your plate, we are going to be very flexible with lesson plans for the remainder of this school year. Even as you transition to concurrent teaching (in-person & remote) your Canvas page can serve as your "plans". Ms. Gardner and I will use your Canvas page to locate your standards and "I Can" statements for each week & subject. Remember the key components of Modeled, Guided, Independent, and Assessment as you plan your week. While we may not be checking for formal lesson plans at this time, it is still important that you have your own plans in place to guide your instruction.

School-Wide Packet Pickup: We would like to coordinate a school-wide packet pickup day each week for all grade levels to best help our parents (this way our parents that have kids in multiple grade levels can get all materials in one trip). If you are preparing tangible packets for pickup please have them out and ready by the end of business day on Thursdays. This way parents have Friday and the weekend to pick up any materials needed for the next week. This is effective immediately. Thank you for your help with this!

Working Remotely: We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.

From the Mrs. Epperley:

We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins:  This book is perfect for talking about how to be a good friend (and how NOT to be:) Create a chart for interactive or shared writing about friendship.  Possible headings include “Good friends will…” or “I can be a good friend.”

1 comment:

  1. Kindergarten and 1st graders are being introduced to “FRIENDLY FRANCINE” in Secrest’s Guidance/SEL classes this month. Francine teaches the students what it takes to be a good friend. This pairs perfectly with Mrs. Epperley’s book suggestion! 😁
