Week of 3/15 - 3/19

Hey Panda Family,

It is the last week of 3rd Quarter! I know you may be running low on energy right now, but Spring Break is right around the corner 😊 We had an amazing first week with all of our students back in the building 4 days! Finish the quarter strong, and don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything. You are a Rockstar! 🌟 Here are the Weekly Wrap updates:

End of Quarter: This Thursday, March 25 is the final day of 3rd Quarter. Report Cards should be completed and turned in to the office by April 1 (before you leave for Spring Break). Report Cards will go home to parents the week of April 12.

Diversity Committee: We are excited to announce that we will be forming a Diversity Committee at PGE to help us better reach all of our students and families. This committee will be led by Ms. Ceglowski. If you could please complete the following survey to let us know your interest and ideas: Diversity Committee

PTA Classroom Allowances: Please see the email from earlier this week titled "Grade Level Allowances & Specialist Budget Lines". Make sure to take advantage of the money PTA has allotted you for your classroom.

Picture Retakes: Picture retakes for all students and staff will be this Friday, March 26. Please see Ms. Willis if you have any questions regarding picture retakes.

Classroom Cleaner: We are getting a new chemical dispenser on Monday, March 22 that will replace #9 to # 19.  Put your bottles of the #9 cleaner outside your door before the tardy bell so they can be collected, relabeled, refilled with #19, then returned to you.

Hallway Hooks: Bookbags can now be hung out in the hallway. Please only allow a few students at a time to get in and out of their bookbags.

4th Quarter Specials Schedule: Below is the link for the first week of the 4th quarter.  The rest of the schedule is coming soon. 4th quarter- Specials Schedule- Week 1

FCAE Teacher Working Conditions Survey (from district): The 2021 “Teacher Working Conditions” Survey is now open for all educators in the district.  All employees, specifically those based at one of our schools, are encouraged to reply.  Please use the link below to access the online survey. All responses will be fully anonymous and are crucial to efforts to continually improve our school climate. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WSFCSFCAE2021

RC Professional Development Day on April 1 (from district): Instructional Services is offering Professional Development for Teachers and Teacher Assistants on April 1st from 8:00-4:00. Since this is a day that TAs do not normally work, TAs that participate in at least 5 hours of district lead PD will receive a stipend for $75. Agenda and Session Link: Bit.ly/AprilRCDay

Teacher Intent: All certified teachers must complete their intent form for the 2021-2022 school year by March 31. The form must be completed from school while you are on the network server. The link to the form can be found here: WS/FCS Teacher Intent

CARES Team Update (from Ms. Ceglowski):

  • Please continue to share any engagement concerns with Mrs. Ceglowski.
  • The team will start meeting as a team every other week as opposed to weekly as we have a majority of students back in the building.  Any concerns will continue to be addressed ASAP.
  • Peer tutoring from HS students is an option for PGE students, please let Mrs. Ceglowski know if you are interested and she will reach out to the program.

Timothy's Technology Corner: Here is Timothy's Technology Corner for this week:

On Thursday, April 1, 2021, the district office will be offering PD for both classroom teachers and assistants. I will be co-facilitating a session on Pear Deck which is an interactive presentation tool that is an add-on feature in both Google Slides and PowerPoint.

Discovery Education

This week, I would like to draw your attention to a few things that Discovery Education has to offer. All of the lessons/resources through Discovery Education are ready to use with the capability of embedding them into other platforms.

Awesome Strategies at your Fingertips: Are you looking for some new strategies to engage your students in learning skills such as summarizing, identifying key ideas and details, inferring and predicting, and asking questions?

Look no further than Discovery Education’s SOS Instructional Strategies channel! Embed these into your Nearpod, Google Slides, or Canvas pages for a variety of ways your students can process their learning!

Tips for Introducing New Strategies:

  1. Introduce strategies that have videos so that students can refer back to it as often as they need to.

  2. Pick two or three strategies and allow students to practice it once a week until they are using it in all content areas (e.g., focus on summarizing a concept, story, etc. using the Six Word Story for Students) with ease.

  3. Once students have mastered those strategies, introduce a few more using the same method.

Daily Sentence Fix Its: There is no need to digitize your old daily fix-its for grammar instruction. Discovery Education has daily fix-its that are readily available and can be assigned through Canvas with ease. The cool thing about these activities is that they are centered around a monthly theme.

Implementation of SEL: Discovery Education has an entire center dedicated to ready-to-use Social-Emotional Learning activities for both teachers and students that are sorted by grade bands.

SEL Resources Include:

April 1st RC PD: Discovery Education will be facilitating sessions all morning for elementary teachers with a science focus, more specifically, the Science Tech Book

Reminders from Previous Weeks

Positive/Exposed Covid-19 Students: Some parents are only contacting the teacher when their child has tested positive and/or been exposed to Covid-19. If you have a parent reach out to you in regards to their child testing positive and/or being exposed, please make sure they also let myself or Ms. Gardner know too. They can call, email, or message us on Dojo and we will follow-up. For every exposure and positive case we have to fill out specific information for the district. Thanks so much for your help with this!

Remote Students Returning to In-Person: We have decided not to wait until 4th quarter to communicate to all remote parents that their child can return to in-person learning. Please send the following message to your fully-remote students via Dojo (you can let them know it is from Mr. Elkins):

Hey Pandas! Effective immediately, your child may return to full in-person learning if you so choose. Any remote students that want to immediately return to in-person learning will need to be a car rider, use a morning/afternoon daycare van, or go to Imprints. If your child needs bus transportation, please contact the front office to get it arranged before your child plans to return to in-person learning (bus transportation is only available for residential students). If your child will be a car rider, please ask your teacher for a pink car rider sign. Students returning to in-person learning are committing to all 4 days of in-person learning each week. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact the front office at 336-703-4122.

- Mr. Elkins

If parents decide to send their child back for in-person learning please let Ms. True know who the student is and when they will begin in-person learning.

Student Attendance: For students to be counted present on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays they must attend in-person if they are an in-person student or they must attend remotely if they are a remote student. Students should not be counted present for work completion only on M/T/Th/F if they did not attend class. They may be counted present for work completion on Flex Wednesdays.

Morning Arrival: This is just a friendly reminder that all staff need to enter through the front entrance of the building first & complete the temperature check and screening before reporting to your room. Thank you for your help with this.

3rd Quarter Specials: Below is the link for 3rd quarter specials. There is a separate specials schedule for February 15-19. This is a Remote Learning Week.  We will use the old Remote Learning schedule.  (More details to come)

Lesson Plans: In an effort to not add something else to your plate, we are going to be very flexible with lesson plans for the remainder of this school year. Even as you transition to concurrent teaching (in-person & remote) your Canvas page can serve as your "plans". Ms. Gardner and I will use your Canvas page to locate your standards and "I Can" statements for each week & subject. Remember the key components of Modeled, Guided, Independent, and Assessment as you plan your week. While we may not be checking for formal lesson plans at this time, it is still important that you have your own plans in place to guide your instruction.

School-Wide Packet Pickup: We would like to coordinate a school-wide packet pickup day each week for all grade levels to best help our parents (this way our parents that have kids in multiple grade levels can get all materials in one trip). If you are preparing tangible packets for pickup please have them out and ready by the end of business day on Thursdays. This way parents have Friday and the weekend to pick up any materials needed for the next week. This is effective immediately. Thank you for your help with this!

Working Remotely: We can only approve individuals working remotely if it is COVID related. If you are not able to come in to work you must take sick, personal, or annual leave.

IF Updates

April 1 RC Day: From Stephanie Ward: Each elementary classroom teacher will complete one hour of literacy training on the April 1st RC Day. Teachers need to select one literacy session from the three options in their grade span timeframe from the ELA RC Day Choice Board. The direct meeting links to the session options are on the choice board document. ELA RC Day Choice Board

May PD session: May 6 will be our last after school PD session.  We will begin cross-grade level meetings in preparation for the 21-22 school year.  Mark your calendar!

Upcoming Dates:

March 23 - SCC & Wellness Committees meet @ 3:30
March 25 - End of 3rd Quarter
March 26 - Picture Retakes (students & staff)
March 31 - Teacher Intent Form due
April 1 - Teacher Workday
April 1 - Report Cards due to Ms. True
April 2 - FCAE Teacher Working Conditions Survey closes
April 2 - 11 - Spring Break

When we are drained it is so much easier to focus on the negative, rather than finding the positive. If you don't do anything else this week, please take 5 minutes to write someone a nice note, send them an encouraging text, or write them a quick email. It could be for a student, colleague, or both! Positivity breeds positivity! I promise, it will change your whole demeanor for the day 😊
