Week of 11/15 - 11/19

Hey Panda Family,

I hope everyone had a restful and filling Thanksgiving! I am so thankful and grateful for each of you 😊 Your passion for helping our pandas is second to none, your perseverance through challenging times, and most importantly your friendship are all things I am extremely thankful for. Finish 2021 strong as we head into our final month of the year!

Here are the Weekly Wrap updates for this week:

Lori Olive: Please join me in welcoming back Ms. Lori Olive. Ms. Olive was a former teacher at Piney Grove and she will be joining us part-time as an Extended Learning Tutor to help with our bubble students in grades 3-5. We are so glad to have you with us, Ms. Olive!

Absences/Request for Time off: Over the past few weeks we have encountered quite a few situations with staff regarding absences/requests for time off that have not been approved ahead of time or no sub is arranged. When these situations occur we have to make adjustments on the fly that inevitably effect someone else (taking an IA, moving a sub that was already scheduled with another class, canceling LETRS coverage for someone so Tama can sub, etc.) Please be mindful of this. Below is a review of procedures for both types of absences. Please don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Owens, myself, or Ms. Gardner if you need help filling an absence. We are here to help. Thanks!

Planned absences
Find a sub
Fill out a request for leave sheet at least one full day ahead of time
Put absence into Frontline and assign sub
**If you want to use Tama Lloyd as your sub, you must get with Ms. Owens to see if she is available.  Ms. Owens will update Ms. Lloyd's schedule and you will enter your absence into Frontline as "no sub needed".  You will not assign her in Frontline as she is already in the system assigned to our school.  Ms. Owens will make a note in the system.**
Unplanned absences
Please contact Elkins, Owens and Gardner as soon as possible, by text and/or email.  If possible, put absence in Frontline.
If you can no longer get into Frontline, please let Owens know.  She can get your password reset.

United Way Pledge Link: We hope everyone will consider donating to the WS/FCS United Way Pledge. Here is the link to donate - https://uwfc.upicsolutions.org/wsfcs

State Budget: The state budget was just signed by Governor Cooper. Looks like some raises may be on the way! Here is an article with details - Teacher Pay Raises - NC State Budget

Instructional Rounds: Ms. Gardner and I will continue to focus on Small Group Instruction through December. We have seen some awesome skill-based small group instruction throughout K-5! We plan to share the updated data in next week's Weekly Wrap.

Winter Parties: Please avoid Friday, December 17 when planning classroom winter parties (PBIS event that day). If you choose to have a party, I encourage you to plan it on the short week before winter break (December 20th or 21st) if possible.

December Drills: We must have a fire and community lockdown drill in December. Neither will be announced. Please review procedures with your class. PGE Safety Plan

East Forsyth High School Chorus: On Friday, December 10, students from EFHS will perform their winter choral program in the gym starting at 8:45.  K-2 will attend the show in-person.  The rest of the students can watch via Zoom (for social distancing purposes). We will send out a link.

Yellow trash cans: Please place only breakfast and lunch items in these trash cans.  Use your classroom trash cans for everything else.

Recycle Bins: Please encourage your students to place any recyclables in the clear bins located by the water fountains. Ms. Rempe's class will be monitoring these bins and emptying them periodically. Thank you, Ms. Rempe's class for taking on this environmental initiative!

Lions Club Eye Exam: On Tuesday, December 21 starting at 8:45 a.m., the Lions Club will conduct eye exams with grades 1st, 3rd, and 5th.  Schedule to come soon.

After School Hours Imprints: As you know, Imprints rents spaces in our school through the district to provide before and after school care.  The following areas are designated to Imprints:
  • The cafeteria
  • Both blacktop areas
  • The playground
Children belonging to staff will stay area from these areas unless they are part of Imprints.
Reach out to Mrs. Gardner if you have questions.

Week of 11/1 - 11/5

Hey Panda Family,

It is definitely starting to feel like Fall 🍂 We had a wonderful week celebrating the 50th day of school, Dia de los Muertos, and hot coffee! Short week coming up and much needed vacation days! Maximize each day this week and don't forget to thank your veterans 🦅⭐

Here are the Weekly Wrap updates for this week:

Heather Whicker: Please join me in welcoming back Heather Whicker! Ms. Whicker will be returning in a part-time role to support our 1st grade teachers with small group instruction and interventions. We are so happy to have her rejoin our Panda family!

Bob Vorbroker (former principal at PGE): Please keep Mr. V in your thoughts and prayers. Mr. V has a benign tumor that is located behind his inner ear. He has to have invasive surgery in the coming weeks to have it removed. The surgery will impact his long-term hearing and require months of physical therapy to help him regain his balance. He is in good spirits, but I know he would love to hear from you if you have a second. His cell number is 336-682-9464. A thoughtful text or phone call would mean a lot.

November 22 & 23: November 22 & November 23 are RS Workdays. You may work from home on these days if you so choose. We are not scheduling any meetings for these days so certified staff can work on their LETRS units.

K-2 Early Learning Partner Newsletter (from district): The Early Learning Partners (ELPs) would like to share some November ELP News & updates. Please click here or use the link below to access the November ELP News. We are excited to continue supporting principals, teachers, and students as we successfully move forward into the 2020-2021 school year.

Media Center Updates: Coming soon to the media center:
  • S.M.A.C and Staff Picks book recommendation shelf
  • New signage

4th-5th media classes will need Chromebooks this week.

Field Trips: All field trips for this school year must be submitted by Tuesday, December 21.  There are fewer activity bus drivers.  Dates are filling up fast.  Reach out to Mrs. Gardner if you have questions.

IF Updates

iReady Incentives for the year: This week will be the first week that we give a SURPRISE treat to a class for meeting iReady goals.  Please use this to help motivate your students.  We are working on the exact plan for our MOY celebration, but as soon as we know what it will be, we will announce it.  There will also be a spot on our newly redesigned iReady bulletin board that will remind students of these incentives.  Stopping by to notice these incentives would be a great way to keep these rewards at the forefront of their minds.

MTSS reminder: EVERYONE has been doing a great job with implementing interventions and progress monitoring for students who need extra support.  Remember to do two things: first, look at your data and decide when we need to either discuss it in PLT of have a “mini-meeting” to talk about it.  Remember, you control this part of the processSecond, enter your contacts with parents in ECATS (directions: open ecats, click students at the top, search for the student, click the student name, click student information and scroll down to contact.  This is where you will enter it.)

LETRS pacing reminder: unit 1 sessions 5-8 should be completed before the training date at the end of November.  Unit 2 sessions 1-4 will be covered in January.  You may want to pace yourself to get started with Unit 2 to ensure you will finish it before those January dates.

Technology Updates

Check out this month's edition of Timothy's Technology Corner. It is chocked full of useful information that I am sure everyone can benefit from.
Headlines for November include:

  • Extra Credit: More Mentionable Features from Discovery Education
  • Week of Code
  • Easy as PIES
  • Numbered Heads Together: A Kagan Cooperative Learning Strategy
