Hey Panda Family,
Our color days were a success! Thank you all for participating in the fun. We had most all our pandas walk in independently today 🙌 I am so proud of the hard work you and your students have put in these first two weeks to establish routines, build classroom community, and begin instruction. The IMPACT you are making does not go unnoticed. Let's keep each other above the line and I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! 🐼
Here are the Weekly Wrap updates for this week:
New Updates

Fall Pictures: Fall pictures are on Monday, September 18, 2023. There are extra order forms in the office if needed.
MTSS: While Ms. Balint is out on maternity leave, please send all MTSS questions to Ms. Gardner and Ms. Ceglowski. They will work together to hold all meetings and update plans while Ms. Balint is out.
Buddy Walk (from Ms. Lindley): This year is the 25th Annual Greater Winston-Salem Buddy Walk and Family Fun Day Hosted by the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Winston Salem.
As many of you know, I have a student near and dear to my heart with Down Syndrome. I would love for our entire staff to show her, her family and this entire organization support by registering for the Buddy Walk on October 21 at West Forsyth High School. You can use the code wsfcs to get $10 off your registration. If you are unable to walk but would like to make a donation that would be greatly appreciated also! Second Step SEL Lessons: This year we will be completing the Second Step SEL lessons again. These lessons provide great strategies and skills for the kids to help them process their feelings and responses through a variety of situations. These lessons are a great resource for Morning Meetings. There are 20 total lessons that your class will complete over the course of the school year. Feel free to pace them out as you see fit. We will periodically monitor your progress. Here is the link - https://www.secondstep.org/. Please reach out to Ms. Ceglowski if you have any questions or need help.
Positive Communication Log: Make sure you are filling the buckets of your students and your parents. Please send a positive Dojo, make a positive phone call, or send a Panda Gram for each student by the end of the month. Positive Communication Logs are due to Mr. Elkins by October 1.
Parking Up Front: I need to ask a favor. I don't mind one bit if staff park in some of our front parking spots. However, we have run into a few times this week where there were no spots available for visitors. If you could, please make sure there are at least 4-5 spots for visitors that are left available in the morning. If you normally park in the front spots and there are only 4-5 spots left open when you get here, please kindly park in one of the side lots. Thank you for your help with this!
Health Updates: With the uptick in COVID cases, and flu season just around the corner, here are a few reminders.
- All CDC and DHHS COVID-19 guidance on isolation and symptoms are now just recommendations that we can give parents, students, and staff. They are NOT requirements anymore.
- There are no longer requirements or guidance on masking.
- COVID cases are no longer reported.
- Students and staff should be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school or work.
Media Updates (from Ms. Epperley): Please see the Media updates below.
- Book Fair: September 25-30; We will be having our annual Pumpkin Palooza decorating contest. More information coming soon!
- Dot Week! Next week is Dot Week during specials. Keep an eye out for ways to integrate The Dot. https://www.internationaldotday.org/
- 3-5: Bring Chromebooks to Media - (We will be giving you copies of the user agreement forms so you will know who is a take home and who is a day user :)
Shout-Outs: From Ms. Sherrill - Thanks to my 4th grade team, Pam Mason, Ms. Guffey, and Ms. Owens for helping me when I was out at the beginning of the year! I am so appreciative of their willingness to get my class off to a great start start without me! This has to be the best school family to be a part of! 💚
Updates from Previous Week
Staff Meeting Presentation: Here is the link to the Opening Staff Meeting - Opening Staff Meeting 23-24. Please make sure review all dates and things-to-do before the start of the school year.
BOY Dates: I want you to go ahead and have the BOY testing weeks so you can begin to plan. We will review this at length in our first PLT, but some of these dates fall before that. For Mclass, K-2 Assistants may help with covering the class so K-2 teachers can assess without distraction. I will let K-2 teachers work out this schedule with your grade level and your Instructional Assistants.
iReady Reading BOY Diagnostic - Complete the week of 9/5 - 9/8
Mclass (K-4 only) - Complete between 9/11 - 9/22
iReady Math BOY Diagnostic - Complete between 9/11 - 9/22
**Here is a short video to remind you how to hide iReady Diagnostic Assessments until you want your students to complete them** - https://youtu.be/sjfnRtBFExQ?si=ekCE_LLEc-i6b-q0
Copies: Ms. Owens and Mr. Elkins have been working with finance to determine the most cost effective method for our school to make copies now that Printshop went up dramatically in their prices. Going forward, we need to make all black/white & color copies here at school. We will only use Printshop for specialty items such as booklets, packets, posters, etc. With this change it will cause a higher volume of copies to be made by our front office staff. They will work as fast as possible, but please make sure you plan ahead and understand the turn around time may be a couple of days. Lastly, please remember that the black copy machines are for less than 12 copies and all other requests will be run by front office staff on the high speed copier. Thanks for your help with this!
Code of Conduct Lessons: All K-5 teachers should complete their grade level Code of Conduct lessons by the end of next week. There are six total lessons that you need to teach. Here is the link to those lessons.
PDP Sign-Up: The PDP Sign-Up sheet is up outside of Ms. Gardner's and Mr. Elkins' office. This is for certified staff only. Please make sure you sign up for a time. If you need to know who to sign up with, please refer to the Observation List below. All K-5 teachers and Specialists will have one of their goals as the Thematic Planning goal.

If You Give a Mouse a Cookie: This year we have seen an increase in some furry rodent friends finding their way into the building, pod, and trailers. I talked with our pest control supervisor and he said if we do these things it will help drastically reduce the number of field mice we will see:
- Store any candy, snacks, etc. in sealed Tupperware containers
- Store any candy, snacks, etc. high on a shelf or on top of a cabinet (don't leave on floor level)
- If you see evidence of mouse droppings let the office know immediately
- We will get it cleaned up and put in the work order
- Clean up any evidence of a mouse immediately - they will return to that location if droppings or crumbs are left (we will help with the clean up)
