Hey Panda Family,
If you didn't know Mr. Rick well, he was an amazing man. He had over 40 years of custodial/floor experience, was a caretaker for many in his family, and he would always tell me, "Mr. Elkins, I will make sure we have the cleanest building in the district" (he knew I was a little competitive even when it came to building cleanliness - Lol). Mr. Rick was quiet and gentle, but deep down he would work so hard and do anything to make sure our floors and the building was properly cared for. I don't fake my words, I really do love each one of y'all - so losing Mr. Rick has been difficult. Not because of the work that will no longer take place, but because we lost an amazing man with a kind smile and a bigger heart for others. Love you, Mr. Rick.

New Updates
50th Day of School: If you want to break out your poodle skirt or greaser jacket, Monday, October 27 is the 50th day of school! 
Paw Form Consequences: Here is the list of acceptable and unacceptable classroom consequences if a student gets a Paw Form. We will continue to add to this list, and I will be communicating these changes to parents soon. Here is the list: Paw Form Consequences 
Picture Retakes: We have a small conflict on Wednesday, 10/29/25 with picture retakes, since this is also the day for the Reading Check-ins for grades 3, 4, and 5.  Please send any 3rd and 5th grade students that need to do retakes as soon as they get here.  The photographers will be set up by 8:05 in the media center, so feel free to send them as soon as first bell rings.  4th grade will do their retakes on their way to specials. The original date for fall pictures was 9/29/25 so please check your attendance for that day to see who did not get one taken. Sorry for the confusion but hopefully this will allow testing to start on time.  If you see any issues, please let Ms. Owens know asap. NC Reading Check-In: We will have our Reading Check-In #1 on Wednesday, October 29. 3rd and 5th grade will begin at 8:30 and 4th grade will begin after Specials. We also have a small group of 4th graders who will be taking the Read to Achieve Assessment, which will also begin after Specials.
Teachers Testing: All 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade Teachers, Idol, Seely, Landis, Barnes, Russell, Postle, Lawson, Bowman, Flynn, Vermilyea, Pereda, Lloyd
You may pick up your testing bin in Ms. Guffey's room beginning at 7:15.
Mclass Progress Monitoring: Please make sure you are progress monitoring your students in Mclass. Here is the link to the progress monitoring calendar:

EVAAS Teacher Reports: EVAAS Teacher reports are now available. You can access your report via NC Ed Cloud and then to EVAAS. We will review these reports in more detail during PLTs in the coming weeks. 
Child Nutrition Policies: Here are just a few cafeteria policies, from Child Nutrition, for you to be familiar with:
- If you are having a party with food (i.e. pizza, Chick-fil-A, etc.) as an individual class, you are still required to bring the students through the line to get a lunch. They don't have to eat, but they have to have the option. 
- Staff are not allowed to deny students snacks or ice cream on any day, or because they are having parties.
- Staff are not allowed to pick the students meals, or make them choose vegetables. The tray must consist of the student's choices each day.
Gardner's Schedule: Next week Ms. Gardner is on campus Monday, Wednesday, and Friday! 
Fridays in November and December will be split between schools.  CCES- AM   PGE- PM. The exceptions are November 7 and December 5. Ms. Gardner will go to CCES after the AP meeting. Here is her full schedule for November & December: November & December

PTA Reimbursement Link: Don't forget, every teacher gets $100 from PTA to go towards your classroom and your students. You will buy the items and then get reimbursed from PTA. Memorial for Debby Pegram (from the Retiree Committee): Dear family, retirees, staff at Piney Grove and friends, Mr. Elkins has invited us to attend a dedication ceremony at Piney Grove Elementary on Monday, November 17 at 3:45pm. We will be dedicating a glider purchased in Debby Pegram’s memory. Debby also wrote Piney Grove’s school song the year the school opened in 1990. The song has been printed on a plaque that will hang near the front lobby of the school. Thank you to all who have supported by donating funds. It will be a great event celebrating a very special teacher at Piney Grove Elementary. We look forward to seeing you Monday, November 17.
Open Enrollment State Health Plan: Open Enrollment is underway and ends Oct. 31!
All active and Non-Medicare members will be automatically enrolled into the Standard PPO Plan (formerly the 70/30 Plan). If you would like to enroll in the Plus PPO Plan (formerly the 80/20 Plan) or if you would like to make a change to your dependents, you will need to TAKE ACTION during Open Enrollment.
There are several changes for 2026:
- There are increases to the deductible and copays on each plan.
- Salary-based premiums for active members is new, which means your salary dictates your premium rate. When you log into eBenefits you will see your 2026 monthly premium rate. Your salary information was provided by your HR department, which determines the salary band. Salary-based premiums does not impact retirees. Monthly premiums for all members can be found on the Plan’s website at www.shpnc.gov
