Week of 9/13 - 9/17

Hey Panda Family,

We are closing in on the first month of school! Time flies ⏰ This week we celebrated our playground finally reopening, our first in-person PTA meeting in over a year, and our school community collecting over 2,000 non-perishable food items for a local food pantry! What an amazing week 😊

Here are the Weekly Wrap updates for this week:

Staff Picture: This Tuesday, September 21 we will have our Staff Meeting @ 3:30. We will be taking our staff picture outside at the playground to start our meeting. Since our picture will be outside we will take the photo without masks. However, if anyone is not comfortable taking their mask off outside for the picture then they are more than welcome to continue wearing it. Please wear your new Piney Grove Staff shirt on Tuesday for the picture. Thanks!

Staff Meeting Agenda: Here is the agenda for our Staff Meeting on Tuesday. The meeting will last the full hour.

  • Staff Picture (wear your new Piney Grove Staff shirt)
  • Staff Awards
  • Pierce Group Benefits
  • PBIS Refresher
  • Morning Meetings
  • Instructional Rounds
  • CARES Team Updates
  • MTSS Updates
  • Covid Updates

Picture Day: Fall pictures will be on Wednesday, September 22. Click on "Fall pictures" for the schedule. Please check your time slot to make sure there are not any conflicts.

  • Staff can take pictures starting at 7:30 until 8:20 or with your class.
  • Pictures will be taken in the media center and there will be 3 photographers.  Your kids can go to any of the photographers - they will all have access to all rosters.
  • Parents can order online or send in their order form on picture day.  This should be given to the photographer at the time of pictures.  All kids will have their picture made regardless of whether they order or not.  Those kids will get proofs when pictures come back, and they will have the chance to order them at that time.

Food Drive Winners: Our school community is amazing! This past week we collected over 2,000 non-perishable food items for the Hope Center Food Pantry. What a wonderful act of kindness 💚 Here are the grade level winners that earned a pizza party:

  • PreK - Lindley
  • K - Sloan
  • 1st - Harman
  • 2nd - Rempe
  • 3rd - Gant
  • 4th - Jones
  • 5th - Adams & Medley (tie)

PBIS Updates: To continue keeping staff and students safe, we will not have a whole school PBIS assembly on Friday, September 24.  More details to come soon on the alternate plan.

Dental Screening: Dental screening is Thursday, September 30.  Grades K, 3rd, and 5th.  Click on "dental screening" for the schedule.

Observations: Observations for Certified staff that are on standard plans, comprehensive plans, or renewing their license this school year will have their first observation announced.  Click "observation" for the pre-conference questions.

COVID procedures: Thank you for your patience as we work through the COVID procedures.  We will talk more about this at Tuesday's staff meeting. Below are the 2 letters we send/mail home so you know what they look like.

Testing Updates: Training for NC Check-Ins will be held soon.  We will do this during PLT's. All students in 3-5 will complete the online tutorial prior to testing. Here are important testing dates coming up.
  • 4th grade R2A - October 14th (select students)
  • 5th grade Science Check-in - October 14th
  • 3rd- 5th math Check-In - October 15th
  • 4th and 5th ELA Check-In - October 18th
  • Make up testing - October 19th-22nd

Makeup Work Expectations (from district): Based on AR 5110, students who are absent have one day to complete make-up work for every one day absent.  This year, we are no longer providing the additional five-day grade period allowed last year as a part of our Remote Learning Plan.  Once students return to school, they should work with their teacher to gather missing assignments and establish the appropriate due dates.  For example, if students are absent due to a COVID-related exclusion for 10-14 days, they should complete their extended learning packets or Canvas assignments during that time to limit instructional loss. According to the AR, however, students may be provided 10-14 days (equivalent to the days missed) to complete missing work.

Morning library check-out is a huge success! We have been rotating about 20 students through each morning, checking out new books.  Please let us know if you want barcodes made for your students to use as "library cards".  Any and all are welcome between 7:50-8:20.

S.M.A.C: (Student Media Advisory Committee) is coming soon! 4th-5th students have started applying for this committee to help plan and promote our media program.  More to come...

Staff Book Club (from Ms. Epperley):  We are planning a new style of Staff Book Club this year.  Meeting and discussing a shared read didn't really seem to work for us, so we are planning to put a small shelf in a teacher common area for grown up books to take and trade.  We wouldn't be able to just leave random books, though.  We would need to fill out a little review card and place it in the book for the next person to read! Still reading together but more self-paced😊

Parent Communication Logs: A friendly reminder that your Positive Parent Communication Log is due by October 1. All students should receive a positive Dojo message home, a Pandagram, or a positive phone call home by this date. Build that positive collateral with your families. Once your log is complete and filled out, simply print and place in your green Teacher Growth Notebook binder. If you need a Teacher Growth Notebook binder please see Ms. Grubbs. They are located in her office.

PTA & Hospitality Sign-Up: Please don't forget to join PTA and Hospitality this school year. They both do so much to support our school and your classroom. Here are the links:

Items from Previous Weeks

Opening Staff Meeting Presentation: 2021-2022 Opening Staff Meeting

Positive Covid Student Cases or Exposures: If a parent reaches out to you letting you know their child has tested positive for Covid, or has been exposed outside of school, please email Ms. Gardner and myself so we can reach out to the parents and input the case into the district system. Also, make sure you communicate to the parent how to access the child's makeup work while they are absent.

Attendance due to Student Quarantine: If asked about attendance for quarantine, please share the following information with parents. The attendance procedures from DPI will be followed for the coding of quarantine students in PowerSchool.  The absences will be excused absences.

Asynchronous Work During Quarantines (from district): If students are absent due to inclement weather, long term sickness, or quarantine, teachers should provide playlists or assignments to continue learning through Canvas.  Since we are not using concurrent teaching practices this year, playlists and other assignments housed in Canvas would provide asynchronous learning and continued practice during extended absences.  If an entire class is quarantined, teachers may want to return to teaching the whole class through Zoom or Teams during the duration of the quarantine.  (Note- A device distribution plan may be needed for K-2.)

Emergency Sub Plans: Please make sure you have created emergency sub plans in case you have to be out on a moment's notice. Your sub plans should have a detailed schedule, any important student information (health info, behavior concerns, etc.), and lesson plans.

Your lesson plans in Canvas should serve as a blue print for your instruction. If you would like to create more detailed plans for yourself you are more than welcome to, but it is not required.
