Week of 9/6 - 9/10

Hey Panda Family,

How is it that the short weeks always feel longer??? 😵 As we close in on the first month of school I want to remind all of us (myself included) that we have to take care of ourselves before we can be at our best to take care of others. Life has thrown us a lot of curveballs over the past couple of years and it can definitely be stressful at times. This is where we have to lean on each other as a school family to support each other. It is important that we pace ourselves, prioritize self care, and value the relationships we have in our building so we are in the best place to serve our students. We love you all 🐼

Here are the Weekly Wrap updates for this week:

Food Drive: All this week we will be promoting a non-perishable food drive that partners with the non-profit Girls That Give. Students can bring in non-perishable food items all next week and should place them in the cardboard box in your classroom. The class on each grade level that brings in the most items will win a pizza party. Girls That Give is a non-profit that was started by two of our panda students, Cora (3rd grade) and Grace Rubley (1st grade). All items will go to help a local food pantry.

Emergency Bookbags: Please make sure you update your classroom bookbag for this school year. Your bookbag should have an updated class roster, your red and green cards, a flashlight, medication for students that have it at school, bandaids, tissues, etc. If you need any of these items please reach out to the front office and we can help you!

Heggerty (K-2): Heggerty instruction should begin this week for all K-2 classrooms. If you have already started you are ahead of the game!

Flocabulary: Don't forget that we still have our school-wide subscription to Flocabulary! It is an amazing vocabulary resource with tons of videos and activities for all subjects. If you need help accessing this resource please see Ms. Grubbs. She can help you with login information.

Integrating Technology Instruction: This upcoming week Mr. Younts will be reaching out to each grade level to schedule a time for him to join one of your grade level meetings. Mr. Younts' goal is to help you enhance units with technology instruction while also helping coteach these instructional tools in your classroom. This is part of his PDP goal and should help boost the content of your instructional units.

Fire Marshall: We had our fall inspection this past week.  We have a few things to clean up. Ms. Gardner will email individual teachers, but see below for general reminders.
  • Back doors cannot be covered by posters.  Wall clings and small pieces of art are ok, but most of the door must stay clear.
  • Desks cannot be in the hallway
  • Nothing can be hung from the ceiling or across doors.

September Drills: In addition to our fire drill, we will have lockdown and reverse evacuation drills.  Please review procedures for lockdown and reverse evacuation drills before Thursday.  If the weather holds, we will have the reverse evacuation drill Thursday and lockdown drill Friday.

Media Center: We are making barcodes for grades 1-3 to use for morning check out. Open check out is 7:50-8:20. Fourth and fifth can use their student number.

A note from Mrs. Ceglowski: The EAP Employee Assistance Program is available to all employees of WSFCS and is a great resource for those of us needing someone to talk to.  See the link below for an informative flyer about the program.  It's easy and free.   There is a lot of understandable stress due to COVID and all that the pandemic has done to change our lives in various ways.  Let's take extra care to be kind to each other.  We often don't know the burdens our coworkers are carrying around.  Finally, let's focus on practicing self-kindness.  Take a minute to remember all the compliments you got last week.  Remember a hug you got from a student or a note they made for you.  We all have the negative on repeat so let's try to replace that internal self-talk with some positive. You guys are amazing!

CARES Team: CARES team will be a little different this year.  A small clinical team consisting of our Social Worker, Ms. Davis, Psychologist, Ms. Schendstock, and Ceglowski will meet twice a month to review student needs.  Please refer by sending an email to Mrs. Ceglowski.  You can refer for any type of engagement concern including attendance, mental health concerns, family issues, anything preventing a student from doing his or her best work at school.  We will discuss and pull in any relevant service providers to try and mitigate the problem.

PDP conferences: Elkins and Gardner have a schedule for certified staff to sign up for their PDP conferences outside of their office. We would like to complete these over the next two weeks. Here is a list to see who is observing you this year: Observation Schedule 2021-22. Please sign up with the correct administrator.

Parent Communication Logs: A friendly reminder that your Positive Parent Communication Log is due by October 1. All students should receive a positive Dojo message home, a Pandagram, or a positive phone call home by this date. Build that positive collateral with your families. Once your log is complete and filled out, simply print and place in your green Teacher Growth Notebook binder. If you need a Teacher Growth Notebook binder please see Ms. Grubbs. They are located in her office.

PTA & Hospitality Sign-Up: Please don't forget to join PTA and Hospitality this school year. They both do so much to support our school and your classroom. Here are the links:

Items from Previous Weeks

Opening Staff Meeting Presentation: 2021-2022 Opening Staff Meeting

Positive Covid Student Cases or Exposures: If a parent reaches out to you letting you know their child has tested positive for Covid, or has been exposed outside of school, please email Ms. Gardner and myself so we can reach out to the parents and input the case into the district system. Also, make sure you communicate to the parent how to access the child's makeup work while they are absent.

Attendance due to Student Quarantine: If asked about attendance for quarantine, please share the following information with parents. The attendance procedures from DPI will be followed for the coding of quarantine students in PowerSchool.  The absences will be excused absences.

Asynchronous Work During Quarantines (from district): If students are absent due to inclement weather, long term sickness, or quarantine, teachers should provide playlists or assignments to continue learning through Canvas.  Since we are not using concurrent teaching practices this year, playlists and other assignments housed in Canvas would provide asynchronous learning and continued practice during extended absences.  If an entire class is quarantined, teachers may want to return to teaching the whole class through Zoom or Teams during the duration of the quarantine.  (Note- A device distribution plan may be needed for K-2.)

Emergency Sub Plans: Please make sure you have created emergency sub plans in case you have to be out on a moment's notice. Your sub plans should have a detailed schedule, any important student information (health info, behavior concerns, etc.), and lesson plans.

Committee Meetings: Committee meetings have begun! Committees meet on Tuesday afternoons. Here is the link to sign up: Committees 2021-2022

They should be easy to follow and should have these elements: Standards, EQ ("I can" statements), Materials used, Assessment activities (should match standard), and any relevant links. Your lesson plans in Canvas should serve as a blue print for your instruction. If you would like to create more detailed plans for yourself you are more than welcome to, but it is not required.
