Week of April 20 - 24

Hey Panda Family,

Y'all did amazing work this week with so much going on: iReady diagnostic, staff meeting, field trips, spring musical, progress reports, and field day! At the beginning of the year you start with a full tank of energy and patience. Throughout the year we use the "gas" in this tank and by this time of the year you are running close to empty. I totally get it and I am right there with you; but together we can make sure we have enough in the tank to finish strong and cross the finish line! Take some time this weekend to refuel a little bit. Check on your colleagues and make sure they are good. I greatly appreciate the people that checked on me this week! Only 21 more days to go! 🐼

Here are the Weekly Wrap updates for this week:

New Updates

May 1: There will be no school on Friday, May 1 due to the excessive absences across the district for the educational rally in Raleigh. Here is what you need to know:
  • All staff either have to report to work or take leave
  • Teleworking is not an option on this day
  • If you plan to not work and take leave you must fill out a white sheet and enter the absence in Red Rover
    • If you need help on what type of leave to take please see Ms. Owens
  • The building will be open on May 1 beginning at 8:00
  • The student instructional day will be made up on May 27

iReady Reading EOY Diagnostic: All K-5 classes will finish the iReady Reading Diagnostic next week. It must be completed by May 1.

Math Check-In #3 (from Ms. Guffey): We will have our last Math Check-in on Monday, April 27. Please review the testing plan below and let me know if you have any questions or concerns. 3rd and 5th grade will begin at 8:30. 4th grade will start after specials at 9:30. Please do not send students to small groups unless you hear from that teacher that they have finished testing.
Materials should be picked up from my room before school. I will come around to collect electronics after homeroom. Remember that the accessibility feature is on for check-ins, but students should not make any changes while testing. Remember to charge your Chromebooks and have headphones available for all students. I will have a cart with extra paper, headphones, and mice between the 3rd and 4th grade hallways.

Testers: all 3rd grade teachers, all 4th grade teachers, all 5th grade teachers, Seely, Landis, Postle, Russel, Flynn, Pereda, Gardner, Lawson, Bowman, Vermilyea, Barnes, and Idol.
Please review the testing plan below for locations and accommodations information.

Science Check-In #3 (from Ms. Guffey): We have changed the 5th Grade Science Check-in to Wednesday, 4/29, due to the High School Graduation Walk. Please review the testing plan and let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Testers: all 5th grade teachers, Lawson, Bowman, Vermilyea, and Idol

Kindergarten Screening: The Media Center will be closed on Tuesday, April 28 for Kindergarten Screening. If you have Media Specials on Tuesday, Ms. Epperley will come to your room.

High School Graduation Walk: The annual high school graduation walk for former Piney Grove students will be this Thursday, April 30 at 9:00. All you have to do is line the hall and cheer on the graduates while the procession music plays!

EOG Updates: Due to school being closed on May 1 we had to adjust the EOG testing window (we are only allowed to test the last 10 days of school). The EOG window is now May 13 - May 27.

We will have retesting this year. Remediation is not required. Parent permission will be required. 3-5 students who score Not Proficient will complete the Retake. 3rd Grade students who score Not Proficient on Reading will take the Read to Achieve in place of the reading retake. If the retest score is higher than the initial score it will be used for achievement calculations and growth analyses.

Updated Testing schedule:

May 13 - Science EOG (5th grade)
May 14 - Reading EOG
May 15 - Science & Reading EOG make-ups
May 18 - Math EOG
May 19 - EOG Retest Reading (5th grade), Math make-ups
May 20 - Read to Achieve (3rd grade), EOG Retest Reading (4th grade)
May 21 - EOG Retest Math (3rd - 5th)
May 22 - EOG Retest Science (5th grade)

All materials on walls, cabinets, etc. must be removed or covered by May 1.

Grade 3-5 homeroom teachers will need to review the online tutorial and turn in a roster (which I will provide) with the day (dates) you completed the tutorial with your signature by May 1. If a student enrolls after you do the tutorial, you must complete it with them so we can add their name to our documentation.

Please let me know if you have any questions/concerns.

Thank you for your continued support, understanding, and flexibility.
